Headquarters News All UNWLA Branches are united in 7 Regional Councils whose prim ary responsibility is to ensure the smooth function ing of UNWLA program s. How ever we have 6 Branches which are not included in any Regional Council due to their great dis tance from an area Council. As Vice-president of the UN WLA Executive Board I have been placed in charge of these Branches — Branch 14 in Hous ton, Tex., Branch 17 in Miami, Fla., Branch 27 in P ittsburgh, Pa., Branch 55 in Los Angeles, Calif., and Branches 62 and 107 in San Francisco, Calif. We keep in touch through the mail. I urge these Branches to continue w riting to me about any problems they m ay encoun ter. I, in my turn, will m ake ev ery effort to continue helping you in all your undertakings. Sofia Krupka, UNWLA vice-president * Among the various anniversa ries which will be observed in 1972, one of the m ost im portant will be the 250th anniversary of the birth of H ryhorij Skovoroda. Skovoroda was an 18th cen tu ry U krainian philosopher who of German collaborators. Olena Teliha was asked to continue as editor, but was told th a t the edi torial policy would have to fol low the German line. She resign ed in protest, and continued working in a U krainian w riters’ association. By then the Gestapo realized th a t the Telihas and their friends would not give up striving for U krainian freedom, and so they were imprisoned and shot in February 1942. Olena Teliha died for her beliefs. The German victory over her was hollow. H er works live and speak for her, and even today, a new generation willingly, like Teliha. faces persecution and death for the same ideal: th a t Ukrainian people m ay live and develop their talents unfettered by any for eign power. MZO developed a school of philosophi cal thought and greatly influ enced the leading U krainians of his time. He studied abroad and for many years resided in St. Petersburg. He was proficient in several languages and was well acquainted w ith the leading phi losophical theories of his day. U krainian communities will m ark his anniversary with scholastic conferences. We urge all UNWLA Branches to become better acquainted w ith th e life of Skovoroda and the im portant contributions he m ade to philo sophical thought of the 18th century.
