OUR LIFE M O NTH LY, 'published by Ukrainian National Womens League of America Vol. XXVIII. JUNE, 1971 No. 6 Understanding the Problem The summer vacation is here again, and much of our organi zational work has come to a standstill. It is a time of rest, yet all is not calm, for in the past few months many events have occurred within our community which have robbed many of us of our spiritual calm. We realize, of course, that this is a time of upheaval. Reform movements are under way all over the world. Old, worn-out standards are giving way to new, more timely ideas and standards which are more in keeping with the needs of modern life. This changeover is not always accom plished harmoniously or in an orderly fashion. It is true of the struggle of the Ukrainian Cath olic Church community for the Bohdan Krawicw: From fields and groves, my teeming native land, I took some samples to a foreign strand, A few small songs, a bunch of vital words, Placed in a knapsack that a charm begirds. Lovage and thyme I took, and sage and rue, To guard from me all spells, and poisons too . . . And bitter wormwood’s leaves also carried; But all these are bow dust, by friction harried — Today I feel keen bitterness of heart.. . Yet I have kept some yevshan*) herb apart, So that my sons may one day catch its scent And find their way home from this banishment. * * Like birds far off, by thundering storms behests, We have been driven from our stars and nests. Flames came in floods. And all our homes and plans Were burned to ashes — and our little clans Fled like the birds, without a rest, it seems . Some memory, some ember of our dreams We sought to save, to cherish in our hearts — About our native land. A dark path starts Forever from its fields to lands afar . . These we have found, but lost our homelands are — Today we beg a tempest may arise And take our children to those lands we prize. *) In Ukrainian folklore, a herb whose smell recalls one’s native land. Translated by C. H. Andruseshyn and Watson Kirkconnel autonomy of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. It is a struggle which has lately taken on very sharp and bitter overtones. Our American-born member ship has reacted in various ways to this problem. The majority condemn the idea and methods of struggle on the religious field. Their attitude can be understood when one considers that our Church is the central bond of our community and a spiritual treas ure which we would not wish to ruin. Yet each struggle has its roots and its reasons. Before we can condemn we must understand what we are condemning. We must understand the issues in volved. We must listen to intel ligent voices from the opposition, for understanding the problem constitutes one half of its solu tion. We shouldn’t forget this dur ing our summer vacation. We can converse with our friends and ac quaintances on this subject. We can listen to various sides, try to understand various opinions. Only in this way will we be able to correctly grasp the situation and jointly find a solution to a most difficult problem. Women, particularly, can do much in this respect. They can soothe ruffled feelings, help to ease tensions. This is very im portant at this crucial time when the solution to our troublesome religious problem can be reached only by clear and rational minds. If we wish to save our Church, we must heed the call to love our neighbor — perhaps the most difficult of God’s command ments.
