W FUW O w as organized in 1948 fo r th e m ain purpose o f coordi n a tin g th e w ork o f U k rain ian w om en ’s organ ization s in th e W estern W orld. T here are 16 n ational organ ization s disp ersed over 4 con tin en ts and 10 cou n tr ie s. M em bership in W FUW O is m u ltin ation al, y e t all its m em bers are u n ited b y a com m on bond: U k rain ian b y origin, th e y are v ita lly in tere sted in th e a ffa ir s o f U k rain e as w ell as th e a ffa ir s o f th e cou n tries w h ere th e y s ettled or w h ere th e y w ere born. A s ev ery w orld organ ization , th e F ed eration h as sta n d in g co m m ittees. T h ese are sta n d a r d : in tern ation al a ffa ir s , w elfa re, cu ltu re, education, and so v ie t stu d ies. H ow ever cu rren t pro gram s are seldom d iscu ssed and are u n fam iliar to m ost. A t th e p rese n t tim e th e y include: — action in d efe n se o f p o liti cal p rison ers in th e U SSR . —p ub lication o f w orks on th e M illennium o f St. Olga, th e P rin cess w ho b rou gh t C h ristia n ity to th e U k rain ian s and a com m em orative w ork on P rin ce ss A n n a Y aroslavn a o f K iev, queen o f F rance. —pub lication o f an independ en t q u arterly “U k rain ian W om an in th e W orld” and a su b scrip tion drive fo r th is m agazin e. — e sta b lish m e n t o f F rien d s o f W F P WO groups. —fu rth e ra n ce o f th e e sta b lish m e n t o f w e lfa re bureaus, k in d ergarten s, volu n teer grou p s. —p articip ation in in te r n a tio n al w om en ’s con feren ces. —p rep aration o f R egion al C onferences o f W FUW O . —p rep aration fo r th e Third W orld C ongress o f U k rain ian w om en. I t would be d iffic u lt indeed to sep a ra te th e s e ite m s into th e m ore and le ss im p ortan t. H ow ever, m o st can be evalu ated m ore e a sily th an oth ers. T heir p rogress or su ccess is quickly observed. The p articip ation in in tern ation al w om en ’s co n g re sses is n ot so e a sily m easured. T he W FU W O is a m em ber o f th e W orld M ovem en t o f M others in F ran ce and th e G eneral F e d eration o f W om en ’s Clubs in th e U n ited S ta te s. It coop erates w ith th e In tern ation al A llian ce o f W om en and th e In tern ation al Council o f W om en. W FU W O rep r e se n ta tiv e s h a v e traveled to Ceylon, G erm any, Fin lan d , T ur k ey, Greece, and all over th e U n ited S ta te s and Canada, to ta k e p art in m e e tin g s o f th e s e groups. T he im p ortan ce o f th is p a r ti cip ation can n ot be too la rg ely em ph asized . U k rain ian p a r tic i p an ts rep resen t U k rain ian w om en in th e fr e e world, th e y im p art sorely la ck in g in fo rm a tio n about U k rain e and U k rain ian s, th e y m ake invalu ab le p erson al con ta c ts and b y now are considered p o sitiv e m em bers, d esp ite th e p olitical clim ate o f our tim e . T heir p resen ce a t in tern ation al m e e tin g s evok es g r e a t in te r e st. P a s t p articip ation h a s gained su ch recogn ition fo r U k rain ian w om en th a t th e n ew P re sid en t o f th e N a tio n a l Council o f W om en Canada is U k rain ian , Mrs. H elen H n a ty sh y n . M rs. S te fa n ia P u sh k ar o f U N W L A is M igra tion Chairm an o f th e N ation al Council o f W om an o f th e U n ited S ta te s. T he con d itions in th e U k rain ian SSR and th e w orld situ a tio n a t p rese n t m ak e th e se n ation al and in tern ation al con ta c ts ever m ore sig n ific a n t. A ll o f th e p rogram s o f th e W FUW O are fin an ced from dues paid in b y m em ber o rgan ization s and ind ividu al m em b ers. T he need fo r g re a ter fu n d s is ob vi ous. A cam paign is u nd erw ay at th is tim e to enroll m ore in d iv id uals who, u n d erstan d in g th e v alu e and e sse n tia l n atu re o f th e F ed er a tio n ’s a c tiv itie s, jo in th is s ig n ific a n t w ork b y b ecom in g A sso c ia te M em bers, C on trib u t in g M em bers or B en efa c to rs. W e h ave p resen ted our read ers w ith a b r ie f su m m ary of th e cu rren t w ork o f th e W orld F ed era tio n o f U k rain ian W om e n ’s O rgan ization s. I t is im p or ta n t w ork w h ich ed u cates w o m en fo r m ore resp on sib le c itiz e n sh ip . It is a large ta sk fo r an y w om en ’s organ ization . A . R. A leader duplicates him self in others. He is a “man” builder. He helps those under him to grow big because he realizes that the more big people an organization has, the stronger it will be.
