GOLDEN W EDDING AN NIV ERSARY Sincerest good w ishes to Rev. and Mrs. Peter M ayewski o f Los A ngeles on their 50th Wedding Anniversary Walter, Anna, and Lorraine Strok on D etroit, Mich. A VICIOUS CYCLE In 1970 the F. W. Faxon Com pany of Westwood, Mass. pub lished an “Index to women of the world, from ancient to mod ern times: biographies and por traits,” by Norma Ireland. The Index, which lists over 13,000 women, is concerned pri marily with those women who played important roles in the histories and cultures of their people. Thus, included in the list ing are queens, heroines, saints, mothers and wives of rulers and statesmen, writers, artists, and women who led the fight for women’s equality. Among the thousands of names the Ukrainian reader will notice with irritation fo u r: Queen Olha — “Russian” ruler, Lesia Ukrainka — “Russian” poetess, Olha Kobylanska — “Russian” author, and Maria Bashkirtseff — “Russian” a r tist. One can hardly blame the compiler of the index for these glaring errors. The names of our women rulers, heroines, civic leaders, writers, artists and edu cators are for the most part completely unknown in the West ern World, while the names of noted women of other Slavic na tionalities appear over and over in world biographical literature. The above-mentioned example is not unique. New biographies frequently depend on older sources and thus old errors are repeated creating a vicious cycle of misinformation and pervert ed facts. I. R.
