OUR LIFE M ONTHLY, published by Ukrainian National Womens League of America Ukraine and UNESCO A t the last session of U N ES CO’s General Assembly the U krainian Communist delegation was supporting the “ basic agree ment of m utual recognition of a rt valuables.” This agreement is drawn to protect a rt treasures fro m destruction fo r any reasons be i t in the name of progress, or as “ ideologically h a rm fu l” ob jects. A t the tim e th is very con ference was ta kin g place, v irtu a l ly thousands of a rt treasures in Western Ukraine alone were be ing destroyed fo r the very rea sons mentioned above. Those who are fa m ilia r w ith the “ Chronicle of Resistance in Ukraine” by Valentyn Moroz know of the burning of works by Archipenko and Nar- but, of the “ death chamber’ in L v iv museum to which ancient U krainian icons are condemned, o f the wholesale destruction of Lesya Ukrainka old memorial “ crosses of free dom” and of the forced resettle ment of the young fro m the v il lage of Kosmach, a center fo r U krainian H utzul art. A ll these measures are taken under the pretext of the fig h t against re li gion — but when we consider th a t a collection of old Russian icons was sent on exhibit around the world — the real reason be comes obvious: to destroy U krainian culture, thus reducing the chances fo r survival of the U krainian nation. Then Russian im perialism can reign uncheck ed by any unrest. This fa ct was not lost on syn dicated columnist E d ith K e rm it Roosevelt, who in her column o f Dec. 21, gave a fu ll account of the posing the question whether any Western diplomats w ill ques tion the sincerity of the U k ra in ian regime in supporting the agreement. Of course they did n o t; and they w ill not unless we, Ukrainians in exile become a political force and force them to. MZO OUR CONVENTION 1971 is an im portant year fo r U krainian women. N o t only do we celebrate the 100th anniver sary of the b irth of the greatest U krainian poetess, b u t th is is also the year of our Convention. I t w ill be a tim e to assess our progress, check our possible weaknesses, take a close look at the direction in which we are go ing, and set goals fo r the im m e diate fu tu re . In order to achieve this, i t is necessary th a t many of our members take p a rt in this Convention, and help to mold our futu re. We especially encourage our young members to come. They w ill take over our organi zation soon enough, so they m ust know the workings of it. To make such massive p a rtic i pation possible and even pleas ant, your Convention Commit tee has been m aking some a r rangements. One o f them is to provide day care center rig h t on the premises, so th a t young mothers can participate w ith o u t w o rryin g about th e ir young sters. Two a rt exhibits are also planned, and fo r relaxation a fte r days of business sessions, a Ball w ill be held. E X H IB IT OF ST. OLGA ICONS IN P H IL A D E L P H IA Icons o f St. Olha fro m the U N W L A competition were exhi bited in the U N W L A Home in Philadelphia on December 6-13. The e xhibit included 12 icons worked in oil, tempera, mosaics, and tapestry. E ig h t o f the icons were done in the U.S., tw o were sent fro m Canada, and one each fro m England and Venezuela. SING, O M Y SONG Long has m y song been held captive in silence, Like bird th a t’s encaged, shut away fro m its flig h t. Long is i t since i t expanded its pinions, In bondage to sorrow, to g rie f’s b itte r blight. Now is the time, 0 m y song, to go roaming, To t r y out th y wings torn and raged w ith pain. Now is the time, O m y song, to seek freedom, To hark how the winds freely sport o’er the main. Roll, 0 my song, like the sw ift-ra n g in g billow, W hich never asks w h ith e r its course shall trace. Fly, 0 m y song, like the s w ift-fly in g seagull, W hich never is daunted by ocean’s w ild space. Sing then, 0 song, like the winds fre e ly blowing, And roar as the billow roars back at the sky. Have not a care th a t the winds leave in echo, And b u t fo r a moment the wave charms the eye.
