Joan g ra d u ated from th e U niversity of Il linois, Chicago Circle Campus, w ith a BA in plastic and graphic a rts in A ugust, 1969, and now has com pleted th e firs t phase of h er p o st-gradu ate study in p ain t ing. B etw een A ugust 11 and 22 of th is year, she attended an a rt work-shop, w here she studied under th e direction of a noted Chicago a rtist. She plans to earn h er M aster of Fine A rts degree in A ugust, 1971, w hen she hopes to a tta in a teaching position a t th e un iv ersity level. H er paintings have been on display a t th e U niversity of Illi nois (Chicago Circle C am pus), th e F ederal B uilding in Chicago, Selfreliance C redit U nion in C hi cago and a t a U krainian stu d en t a rt display a t Lions H all in Chi- one’s goals are tru ly dem ocratic, real satisfactions come from love and friendships th a t are recipro cal, from giving as well as r e ceiving, from cooperating as well as com peting, and fro m helping and in tu rn being helped. Add salt and flour. K nead dough until it sep arates from th e hand. Then add m elted b u tte r (clar ified beforehand) and continue kneading. W hen th e dough is al m ost ready, add th e raisins. Cover dough and let it rise in a w arm place. W hen nearly dou bled in bulk, place in a w ell-but tered pan and bake in a p re heated oven a t 350 degres fo r 1 hour. Combine w ith su g ar and brow n in a pan on top of th e oven. Set aside. B eat egg w hites until stiff. B eat egg yolks w ith su g ar until th ey tu rn a lig h t lem on color. Add lemon rind, a l m onds and egg w hites. Add flour gradually and fold in. P our b a tte r into a long, narrow pan w hich has been b u ttered on th e inside and sprinkled w ith flour. B ake in a pre-heated oven a t 350 degrees fo r 45 m inutes. W hen done, rem ove th e cake im m ediately from pan. It is re a dy to serve n ex t day. U K R A IN IA N SCHOOLS IN BELG IUM The U krainian com m unity in Belgium has established a n e t w ork of U krainian language schools w here children of U krainian p aren ts are in stru cted weekly in th e ir n ativ e tongue. L ast y ear th e re w ere 11 such schools in existence. The school buildings are re n t-fre e and th e teachers receive no financial com pensation, b u t th e schools m u st cover th e teach ers’ tra n s p o rtatio n costs and th e cost of textbooks. U N W LA m onthly donates $50 fo r th is cause. B ranches 22, 28, 33, 63 and 64 have been sponsor ing th is w orthy cause since 1963. A ID TO FLO D VICTIMS IN R U M A N IA E arlier th is spring th e press carried rep o rts on th e flood w hich ruined m any U krainian villages in R um ania. The villag ers are badly in need of help. Our Social W elfare C om m ittee has sta rte d th e m ailing of cloth ing packages to individual fa m i lies in th e flood-hit villages. The m a tte r is a p ressing one because R um ania’s tax-exem p tion on m ailed packages will go out of effect by th e end of 1970.
