Pauline Oleksiw The Parental Role (Conclusion) Democracy places high value upon freedom. In such a way of life, each individual is free to choose his vocation, his religion, his politics, his m arriage ■— in fact, he has freedom of choice in regard to all the m ost im portant aspects of life. The age-old stru g gle for freedom has been waged for the purpose of allowing each individual to lead his life in his own chosen way, subject to the restraint of laws which he helps to fram e. In a democracy, th ere fore, each individual must be educated to become capable of making wise, intelligent choices. How is this to be accom plish ed? Organized study-discussion groups provide an educational setting in which adults m ay p u r sue any topic of interest to them . Through the content m aterial which they study and through group discussion under well- trained leadership, adults m ay acquire both knowledge and un derstanding of any field or sub ject. This can also be achieved through individual m ethods of study, through lectures and oth er m ethods of learning, but there are m any additional values to be gained through group learning situation w here the discussion m ethod is used. In a Good Discussion Group 1. Every person can learn and grow through active participa tion. Passivity does not lead to learning and grow th. 2. Each person learns to think for him self and to express him self. 3. All have opportunities to share their learnings and experi ences w ith each other. Decisions and resulting actions are enrich ed by the knowledge and experi ence of different people. 4. All have opportunities to try to resolve their differences — to reach agreem ent or to ac cept disagreem ent or create som ething new. 5. Each person is likely to gain greater insight into his own feel ings, thoughts, and opinions, as well as those of others. He comes to understand both him self and others better. 6. W orking w ith others tow ard a good end is satisfying not only in the excellence of its purpose; it is also of value in the accom panying result ■— instilling in those who share in such an acti vity a feeling of belonging to the group. Group study and discussion of fer a process through which in dividuals can grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Those who really w ant to grow — who w ant to improve their relation ships w ith others, both in their own fam ilies and in the larger com munity — will find in these group experiences real opportun ity for such development. B ut no one can expect to accomplish these changes w ithout genuine effort. In any good discussion there is content — som ething to talk about. W hat the group talks about is im portant, as well as how it is discussed. M ost topics th at are w orth discussing call for some knowledge of the sub ject. What is the factual basis upon which the solution of any problem must be built? This question m ust be answ ered first. To get the facts, those who p ar ticipate in group discussion would be willing to read and study. O therwise their discus sion m ay become m erely “pooled ignorance,” as it has sometimes been called. Few groups can be m aintained successfully over any consider able period of tim e unless the members are willing to work, to accept responsibility for study and preparation of m aterial which they will bring to the group and share w ith each oth er. T hat is why groups partici pating in this type of P arent Education Program would be called study-discussion groups. Our belief in a free society im- plies th at we have faith in peo ple — in their ability to think, to learn, and to solve their prob lems intelligently. A Parent Ed. ucation Program based on study- discussion groups under trained leadership implies th at we have faith in parents. It is based upon the conviction th at m ost parents w ant to be good and wise par ents. It recognizes th a t for m ost of them there has been little op portunity for education and training designed to help them understand children or them selves as parents. Many of them have not even been aware of their need for such education. A Parent Education Project has been developed to provide opportunities for parents to ac quire the knowledge and under standing th at will help them to see them selves and their chil dren more clearly, and will en able them to solve m ore intelli- Halina Tytla’s icon of St. Olga got the second prize at the UNWLA Contest
