The y ear 1848 b ro u g h t th e abolition of serfdom and th e end to. th e feudal order, b u t fo r U krainians in Galicia it m eant m o re : th e beginning of a n atio n al aw akening. M arth a B ohachevsky-C hom iak teaches E a st E uropean h isto ry in M an h attan College in New Y ork. T his in tere stin g stu dy of a brief, b u t m eaningful period — D r. C hom iak’s firs t contribution to historical scholarship — o rig inated as an honors th esis a t th e U niversity of Pennsylvania and w as presented later in a revised form as a m a ste r’s essay a t Col um bia U niversity. G F W C C O N V E N T I O N I N S A N A N T O N I O , T E X A S The 79th Convention of th e G eneral F ederation of W om en’s Clubs was held on Ju n e 7-12, 1970 in San A ntonio, Texas. The firs t V ice-P resident M rs. E arle A. Brown becam e P resid en t elect and w as installed GFW C P resid en t on th e evening of June 12 . The official opening cerem ony w as held on Jun e 9. The firs t day w as filled w ith d iffe ren t presen tations, including th e M ilitary W ife of th e Y ear and M iss A m er ica 1970. On June 10 an Idea E x change M eeting of Club P resi dents w as arranged, and on Ju ne 11 resolutions and revisions w ere discussed. On Ju ne 12 M rs. W alter V arney M agee, th e P re si dent gave h er repo rt. The Texas Gala B anquet w as held on June 8, 1970. The U krainian N ational W om en’s League and its Public R ela tions C hairm an M rs. M ary D ush nyck had th e ir p resentatio n a t th e In tern atio n al Luncheon on Jun e 11. It w as an a ttra c tiv e view as all foreign delegates g ath ered in th e ir folk costum es. Ukrainian Dishes R ecently we published a sm all cookbook entitled “P a s try ”, w hich dealt w ith th e p rep aratio n of d iffe ren t kinds of dough and b aking h in ts. Its a u th o r is th e noted hom e economics teacher and culinary ex p ert N atalia Kos- teck a S tefan yshy n . The booklet is published in U krainian and has been received w ith g re a t en th u siasm by our readers. M any of them have asked fo r it in an E nglish edition. W e would like to sh are w ith our read ers one of N atalia Ste- fa n y sh y n ’s recipes. It is tak en from h er firs t U k rain ian Cook book, published in 1952 by th e In tern atio n al In stitu te in P h ila delphia, Pa. C h o c o l a t e R o l l w i t h A l m o n d s 5 eggs, separated 5 T. su g a r 2 o z b a k in g c h o c o la te гА lb . a lm o n d s, b la n c h e d a n d g r o u n d 1 cup h e a v y cream 1 T. su g a r 1 tsp . v a n illa B eat egg yolks and add su g ar gradually. M elt chocolate in saucer over h o t w ater and add to egg yolk m ixture. S tir in ground alm onds. B eat egg w hites until s tiff and fold into above m ixture. Bake in well greased pan (8 x 12) fo r 30-40 m inutes a t 300 de grees. T urn out on a piece of w ax p a per, roll up and allow to cool. B eat cream until s t i f f ; add su g a r and vanilla. U nroll p astry , spread w ith cream and roll up again. Allow to stand in ice box until thoroughly cold. Serve in slices.
