A nyone who would show th e w orld th e tru e g re a t scope and depth of U k rain ian culture is condem ned as a bourgeois nationalist, be he even th e m ost dedicated com m unist. D au g h ter of M r. and M rs. P e te r Fedyk of D etroit, Mich., Glo ria w as born in 1947 and w as reared in th e D etro it M etropoli ta n area. N ot only is she a v iv a cious, personable young lady, and is th e only lady w orking as a full tim e p ark n a tu ra list in th e entire s ta te ! Gloria received h er B.A. d e gree, sum m a cum laude, from th e U niversity of D etro it w ith a m a jo r in geography and m inors in G erm an and philosophy. P re se n t ly she is a t th e th esis stag e of h er M aster’s D egree a t W ayne S tate U niversity, D etroit, Mich., specializing in physical g eo g ra phy, aerial p h o to -in terp retatio n fo r rem ote sensing of th e envi ronm ent, and n a tu ra l resources. Securing a position in an area of em ploym ent previously opened only to m an w as no t easy. A fte r m uch le tte r w ritin g and som e qualifying exam inations, last sum m er she w as inform ed th a t th e job of p ark in te rp re te r w ith th e D epartm en t of N a tu ral R e sources of th e S tate of M ichigan w as hers. She is th e firs t wom an to be a uniform ed s ta te p ark officer on a year-round basis in M ichigan although th e N ational P ark Service h as h ad wom en w orking fo r m any years. Since Gloria is M ichigan’s firs t wom an p ark in terp re ter, a wom an ’s uniform had to be designed fo r her. Aided by h er m oth er Stella Fedyk, who is a p a st p res ident of C hapter 37 and is a p ro fessional seam stress, th e y de signed a w in ter and a sum m er uniform . T heir creation w as a p proved by th e D epartm en t of N a tu ral R esources and shall be used as th e official uniform fo r th e ir wom en s ta te p ark officers. B ay C ity S ta te P a rk will be G loria’s m ain base of operations. She will give aid in developing in terp re tativ e pro gram s fo r th e R ifle R iver R ecreation A rea, Taw as S tate P a rk and W ilson S tate P a rk w hich are in h er dis tric t. R ecently Gloria said she w ished to teach college stu d en ts one day, b u t before she did she hoped to w ork in th e field and to g et first-h a n d experience in h er areas of in tere st. H er p ersev er ance won h er th e job to fulfill h er am bition. In answ er to th e q u estio n : W hat is th e aim of th e In te rp re ta tiv e Services of a S ta te P a rk ?, Gloria said, “A s an in te rp re te r fo r an organization like th e UN w orks to tra n sla te one language into an o th er so th a t people can b e tte r un derstan d each other, an in te rp re te r in th e p ark s system w orks to tra n sla te th e out-of- doors and th e environm ent into term s th a t people can u n d er stan d and appreciate. We w ork to help m en relate to th e environ m ent and to see th a t he m u st live in it and w ith it and m u st not exploit it. T herein lies th e en tire idea behind E nvironm ental Q ua lity. M an m u st co-exist w ith th e oth er creatu res th a t sh are th e surface of th e earth , or end up killing th em and him self.” G loria’s w ork schedule in cludes th e u p d atin g of displays in th e Jennison T railside M u seum a t th e p ark by cre atin g new exhibits to utilize m ore th a n th re e hundred m o u n t ed specim ens. She will w rite and p resen t num erous slide-talks concerning ev ery th in g from wild flow ers, Indian legends, geologic form ations of M ichigan, to th e lum bering era of th e Saginaw Valley.
