National Traditions Every year, around Christm as time, we realize more strongly than ever, th a t we all are a p art of the U krainian community. Even if we do not belong to any community organizations, we re new our ties by simply observing as many traditional Ukrainian Christm as rites as we can. This happens simply because in ev ery hum an being there is a crav. ing to cling to som ething bigger than the individual and to m ark th a t belonging by the perform ance of certain rites. E very cul tu re creates its own rites. Ours are w hat they are because they are rooted in our culture, in our beliefs, in our way of living and interpreting life. By observing them we set ourselves ap art as a group. In the Free World we m ay ob serve our rites and traditions w ithout fear of interference or reprisals. In the Soviet Union people insisted on m arking Christm as carols — w ithout any religious them es. Such perm is sion could be interpreted as an easing of pressures, a concession to national feeling. U nfortunate ly it is not. It is intended to di vert attention from w hat is real ly happening: a persecution of all religious life, especially th a t not yet subjected to the Moscow patriarch, and a planned cam paign of destruction of as m any many treasures of U krainian cul ture and history as possible. We hear of fires which have de stroyed ancient m onasteries and libraries, and ruined irreplacable documents and works of art. We hear of a great collection of an cient icons which are kept hid den in the damp cellar of a church in Lviv inaccessible to visitors or scholars. A t th e same tim e a Moscow colection of icons is being displayed and studied. These facts certainly point to a suppression of national identity. In view of this we m ust resist all form s of pressure to m ake us abandon our U krainian tradition. These pressures come from very unexpected quarters. They come from those who wish to see the entire world united, and in the process would deny th a t there are differences in individuals or group preferences. They come from those who are so concerned w ith injustice done in one quar ter th a t they fail to see greater injustices anywhere else. They come from those who, having lost their own group identity, would deny it to everyone else. Let us, by our practice of our own Christm as customs, declare before the world th a t our culture is alive and w orthy of respect and support. C R U SA D E FO R D E C E N C Y We often complain th a t our youth is subjected to too much raw sex and violence shown through th e mass media. Recent ly the General Federation of Women’s Clubs initiated a move m ent designed to let the voice of women be heard in this vital area. As a sta rt we should fam il iarize ourselves w ith the catego ries used in m otion pictures. Then let us avoid those th a t frankly adm it to be dealing in objectionable subjects, and let’s encourage others to avoid them . In case we m ay feel th a t a film has been classified wrongly, let’s w rite and let the industry know how we feel and why. The same applies to TV program s. In eith er case it is best to refer to a specific film or program , rath er than deal in generalities. Illness, sexual and m ental aberrations have been w ith us since the tim e of Cain, but viewing them is cer tainly not entertainm ent, nor art. Being exposed to them often will not prevent them from spreading, and m ay have ju st the opposite effect. So, let’s be come aware of w hat is happen ing in th e m ass media and then let our voices be heard in support of decency.
