Chornovil, Vyacheslav. The Chomovil Papers. New York, McGraw-Hill, 1968. Pp. 246. The Soviet constitution prom ises all the citizens o f the USSR the freedoms o f speech, press and assembly; the soviet legal codes attem pt to provide a fram ew ork of orderly life w ith in bounds of the “ socialist legal ity .” B u t in a country which pro. motes a schizophrenic concep tio n o f re a lity, where hypocrisy is the established policy — woe to h im who takes the communist theory seriously. In the fa ll of 1965 Vyacheslav Chornovil, a 27-year old U krainian jo urn alist, was assigned to cover the tria ls o f a number o f U krainian in te l lectuals. A t the tria ls he was outraged by the blata nt disre gard fo r legality, by the rid icu lous accusations, by the chauvi n istic discrim ination o f the Rus sians against all things U k ra in ian. The accused were trie d and convicted in secret tria ls fo r reading or possessing nonSoviet U krainian publications, fo r non- Soviet in terpretation o f works by Shevchenko, f o r th e ir de mands o f a compulsory in struc tio n o f U krainian children in the U krainia n language. Chornovil wrote a lengthy pe titio n to the public prosecutor o f the U k ra in ian SSR pointing to the “ wanton disregard o f socialist le g a lity” in order “ to prevent a repetition (under d iffe re n t labels) o f the te rro r o f the th irtie s which bled the U krainia n people w h ite and reduced U krainia n statehood to a fic tio n ” (p. 75). — Today, V ya cheslav Chornovil is him self a v ic tim of the “ socialist le g a lity ” : convicted on November 15, 1967 he is serving his prison sentence o f three years o f hard labor. H is petitions and appeals on behalf o f the u n ju s tly convicted U kra in . ian intellectuals, however, to gether w ith the documentary m aterials about them th a t he compiled, are circulating fre e ly both in the East and West. They circulate in hand-w ritten copies in U k ra in e ; they were smuggled a few pages at a tim e out o f the Soviet Union. The publication of The Chornovil Papers in English created quite a s tir in the West ern world. N o t only is th is the most im portant book to come out of Ukraine in recent years; i t is also a profoundly moving hu man document which testifies to the great moral and physical courage o f the new generation o f U krainian intellectuals, to th e ir great sense of d u ty and respon s ib ility to th e ir nation.
