T h e h is to r y o f W FU W O is deeply rooted in th e 80 y e a r old h isto r y o f th e U k rain ian w om en ’s m ovem en t, i t s s tr iv in g s , it s d esires to ser v e w om en, th e com m u n ity and th e cou n try, and it s e f fo r ts t o u n ite all U k rain ian w om en ’s organ ization s fo r th e p u rsu it o f com m on goals. T he coordin atin g organ ization s and th e ir w ork re fle c te d th e tim e s in w h ich t h e y w e re a ctiv e . T he N a tio n a l W om en’s Coun cil, foun ded in U k ra in e in 1919, served U k rain ian w om en durin g t h e period o f U k rain ian in d e p endence and continued it s w ork in e x ile in P ragu e, C zech oslova k ia u n til 1937. T h en th e U k rain ian W om en’s A sso cia tio n in L viv, W estern U k rain e took upon i t s e l f t h e ta s k o f fo u n d in g an oth er coord in atin g cen ter — th e W orld A sso cia tio n o f U k rain ian W om en, fou n ded in 1937. B u t th e W orld W ar II and p o st-w a r ev e n ts in U k ra in e and E urope term in a ted th e w ork o f th is co o rd in atin g body. T h e U k rain ian N a tio n a l Coun cil o f W om en and th e U k rain ian W om en’s A sso cia tio n w ere based in U k rain e and all th e ir e f fo r ts w ere centered around a hom o g en ou s com m u nity. P sy c h o lo g i cal and o fte n p h y sica l th r e a ts com in g fro m o u tsid e due t o th e u n fo rtu n a te p o litical situ a tio n in U k rain e in th e period 1917-1939, w orked tow ard a g r e a t c o h esiv e n e ss in th e organ ization s. T he W orld F ed eration, created in 1948, w a s fa c ed w ith n ew problem s. P h y s ic a lly uprooted fr o m U k rain e, y e t deep ly and em otion ally atta ch ed t o th e hom eland, i t had to respond to th e varied n eed s o f w om en ’s or ga n iza tio n s and w om en w ho lived and w orked under political, social and academ ic cond itions th a t d iffer ed g r e a tly fr o m coun tr y to cou n try. Old v a lu e s w ere co n sta n tly b ein g challenged . T h ere w a s no lon ger a sm all, hom ogen eous w orld to liv e in. W om en and th e ir o rgan ization s, w h eth er local or n ational, h ad to encom pass exp erien ces th e ir p red ecessors n ev er dream ed o f. T h e W FU W O m a y proudly a c cou n t fo r it s w ork in th e p a st 20 years, fo r it s in itia tiv e and spon sorsh ip o f va rio u s w orld w id e com m u n ity p ro je cts, fo r it s E eg io n a l C onferen ce h eld in variou s p a rts o f th e w orld and fo r it s cooperation w ith o th er in tern ation al w om en ’s organ iza tio n s. F rom a sm all group o f w om en’s organ ization s it s m em b ersh ip g r e w to 16 organ ization s in 10 cou n tries on fo u r co n ti n en ts. One m a y en te r in to d etailed d iscu ssio n on equ ally d etailed plans fo r fu tu r e a c tiv itie s and str a te g ie s . T his kind o f d isc u s sion, h ow ever, w ould see m to be fu tile . One gen eral and m ea n in g fu l plan could be th a t th e F ed er a tion and its m em bers w ill in deed str iv e to b e “th e liv in g m on um ent o f th e old, i t s la s t and g r e a te s t w ork.” I t sh a ll rem ain g r a te fu l and gen erous t o it s p re d ecessors. I t sh a ll rem em ber th e ir e f fo r ts fo r th e s e are th e sou rce o f s tr e n g th and en erg y . Y et, w h ile rem em b erin g th e p a st, one m u st be co n sta n tly aw are o f o n g oin g rapid and d ra s tic ch a n g es, o f th e fa c t th a t n ew life g row s ou t o f old w a y s and o f th e n eed to m e et it s ch allen ge.
