T he in itial one we w ish to r e p o rt is th e one on Jun e 5, 1969 in Cleveland, Ohio d u rin g th e G en eral Fed. of W om en’s Clubs Con vention, a t a cerem ony held in th e U krainian C ultural P a rk in C leveland’s C ultural G ardens w hen M rs. W alter M agee, p re si dent of th e G eneral F ederation of W om en’s Clubs, w hich has a m em bership of 11 million, w as p resented w ith a copy of L esya U k rain k a’s book “S pirit of F lam e,” in fro n t of th e statu e of L esya U krainka. She w as also given a g ift of a U krainian wooden carved box w ith a m etal plaque inside, from th e UNW LA Cleveland R egional Council. M rs. Jennie Bochar, vice presiden t of th e Cleveland R egional Council, w as in charge of th e program , a sh o rt one w hich w as as follow s: This chairm an presented M rs. B ochar, who welcomed M rs. M a gee, said a few w ords about Le sya U krainka and recited h er poem, “Hope.” W hereupon M rs. B arnych, pres, of th e UNW LA Cleveland Regional Council, p re sented M rs. M agee w ith th e g ift of th e wooden box. T h ereafte r th e chairm an said a few w ords about th e im portance of L esya U krain ka to U krainian w om an hood and U krainian lite ra tu re 1 can cream of m ushroom soup 1 cup fin e ly chopped cele ry 1 cup diced w a te r ch estn u ts 3 h ard -co o k ed eggs, d iced 1 tab lesp o o n sliced, cry stalized . g in g er 2 tablespo ons rice 2 tablespoons b u tte r Уг teaspo on salt % cup sliv ered alm onds M ix chicken, soups, celery, w ater chestn u ts, eggs, and gin g er to gether. Sprinkle rice and salt over bottom of shallow b ak ing dish. Cover w ith chicken and sauce. Top w ith slivered alm onds th a t have been sauted in b u tter. B ake a t 350 degrees about 25 m inutes. Serves six or eight. and presented h er w ith an in scribed copy of “S p irit of F lam e.” M rs. M agee w as very touched and in h er rem ark s said she was looking fo rw ard to read in g th e book and said she would use it as a reference source fo r w riting h er speeches and w henever else necessary. I also prom ised to send h er th e new V era R ich tran slatio n . M rs. M agee had an opportunity to v isit th e U k rain ian p ark and view th e o th er s ta tues. Significantly, an article, taken from a press release is sued by th is chairm an, appeared th e n ext day, June 6, in th e lead ing Cleveland new spaper “The Plain D ealer,” w hich read as fol lows : “A fittin g addition to th e Con v ention’s In tern atio n al Luncheon day came in th e form of a cere m ony a t th e U krainian C ultural P ark of Cleveland’s C ultural G ardens y esterd ay afternoon, w hen M rs. W alter V. M agee, GFWC president, w as given a copy of “S pirit of F lam e,” a vol um e of poem s by th e late L esya U k raink a of U kraine. “The p resen tatio n w as m ade by M rs. W alter D ushnyck, a con vention delegate rep resen tin g th e U krainian N ational W om en’s League of A m erica.” The o th er recen t event a r ranged by th is chairm an took place on A pril 24 w hen in co operation w ith th e N ational Council of W om en’s H ospitality C hairm an, a group of wom en from foreign countries, now liv ing in U.S., visited th e U k rain ian In stitu te of A m erica and toured our U krainian Folk A rt M useum . A m ong m y o th er activities during th e y ea r w as m y a tte n d ance a t th e G eneral F ederation of W om en’s Clubs Convention as th e U N W LA delegate. I was presented to th e session w hen th e A ssociate M em ber O rganiza tions w ere introduced, took p a rt in th e In tern atio n al Clubs Luncheon and B reak fast and in th e Processional. Supplied W om en fo r Freedom w ith U krainian inform ation fo r its re p o rt a t th e GFW C Con vention. H ad inv itation sen t to M rs. S'pafford, N ational Council of W om en of U. S. P residen t, to UCCA’s program on occasion of 51st an n iv ersary of U krainian independence in New Y ork C ity. W e w ere happy M rs. S pafford attended and a subsequent item and picture w ith h er appeared in th e NCW B ulletin, fro m in fo r m ation supplied by th is ch a ir m an. I also rep resen ted th e U N W LA a t th e F ederation of L ith u a n ian ’s W om en’s Clubs luncheon a t th e W aldorf A sto ria in Feb. and m et M rs. M agee of th e GFWC. A picture w ith h er and th e L ithu anian group and m yself appeared in th e GFWC Bulletin. I rep resen ted our organization a t th e B altic W om en’s Council’s 22nd an n iv ersary p rog ram on M arch 2. M ary D u sh n yck Public R elations C hairm an A N N U A L M E E T IN G OF T H E E X E C U T IV E B O A R D The A nnual M eeting of th e E xecutive B oard of th e U k rain ian N ational W om en’s League of A m erica w as held on June 7-8, 1969, in Philadelphia. U N W LA com m ittee chairm en and th e chairm en of th e Regional Coun cils also took p a rt in th e m eet ing. The B oard adopted a w ork plan fo r 1969-1971. A t th e con clusion of th e m eeting, th e E x ecutive B oard w ent on a to u r of “A scension M anor,” P hiladel p h ia’s U krainian hom e fo r th e elderly w hich is located a t 911 N o rth F ran k lin S treet in th e h e a rt of th e P oplar Redevelop m ent area.
