Six Months of Work A h alf y ear rich in m eetings and discussions has passed. Now, w ith vacations ju s t around th e corner, let us tak e stock, let us evaluate our own w ork, our own accom plishm ents of th e p a st six m onths. In th e relativ e q uiet of th e sum m er we should look over th e field of our w ork, to see w here we stand, and to d e te r m ine th e direction of our f u r th e r activities. Now is th e tim e to d istinguish th e triv ial from th e essential. A lthough th e t r i vial tends to be m ore noticeable, we have done m uch of w hich we can ju stly be proud. T aking advantage of th e post- convention era of extrem ely good-feeling am ong wom en to w ards our organization, six new chap ters w ere organized. T hree of th em include wom en of m id dle age, while o th er th ree con sist of very young m atrons. This fa ct points in th e direction in w hich em phasis should be laid in th e fu tu re to insure a fu tu re of UNW LA. In th e field of cultu ral activ i ties we have com pleted th re e lit erary contests. One of them , sponsored by P e te r and L esya Kowaliv, provided a prem ium fo r a lite ra ry w ork w ith a them e from U krainian h is to ry ; th e o th er tw o w ere sponsored by th e E xecutive C om m ittee of U N W LA. They stress scenes from U krainian folklore and th e fig ure of P rincess Olha. These p re m ium s provide an incentive fo r our w riters and a rtis ts to ex plore th e trea su res of U krainian h isto ry and ethnology to create w orks of lastin g beauty. The cul m ination of th ese prem ium s should be a creation of a P rin cess Olha Fund, w hich would be used to encourage all facets of U krainian cu ltu ral activity. A to u r by our educational chairm an has b ro u g h t fo rth a renew ed in te re st in educational m atters. T raditionally we have been placed in charge of pre- schoolers. To d ate we have o r ganized 14 D ay C enters. The C enters, w here our children have an opportunity to m eet each o th er, to sing and play, to hear U krainian stories and to form friendships w ith U krainian chil dren, are to us a source of pride, Pavlo T ychyna b u t also of concern. The m ost im m ediate of concerns is to tra in teachers, to provide teachin g guides and play equipm ent M uch has been done along these lines, y et m uch rem ains to be ac com plished. O ur p a st w ork has gained us a tr u s t of th e com m un ity — and th a t in itself is a g re a t accom plishm ent. In our social w ork we a re be- GROVES A R E RU STLIN G . . .
