N a. talia Chaplenko, our C ultural C hairm an. A fte r a few consulta tions a program was established. It included lectures and m eet ings w ith w riters and a rtists. The firs t m eeting w as con ducted by M rs. N. Chaplenko herself, who inform ed th e audi ence about th e p rogram and gave a survey of U krainian wom en w riters in th e free world. I t was a su rp rise to all of us to h ear th a t th e re are about 50 of them , m any of th em living and creat ing in New Y ork City. On M ay 21 our B ranch held th e second in a series of m e e t ings. T he B ran ch ’s C ultural C hairm an K ath erin e L ucyshyn invited Slava G erulak, ceram ic a rtis t, and M ichael Pezansky w ith his w onderful slides illus tra tin g a m ost in form ativ e lec tu re on th e ancient a r t of cera m ics. M iss G erulak took us back m any centuries to our ancient ancestors and showed th e devel opm ent of th is oldest of crafts. also w as unable to atten d . M ary D u sh n yck It is su rp risin g to see th a t v a ria tions of th e old m otifs have come down to th is day. A n exam ple is th e m eandering or endless p a t te rn w hich is still used today in em broidery and E a ste r eggs. M iss G erulak who has ju s t com pleted a successful one-m an show a t th e U krainian A rt and L ite ra ry Club, showed som e of h er own ceram ics w hich have roots in th e old U krainian tra d i tion. They are v ery creative and beautiful. She operates from h er studio on New Y ork’s lower E a s t side (in th e vicinity of St. George School). O ur th an k s go again to M iss G erulak and Mr. Pezansky fo r a m ost w onderful evening. M any m em bers of th e bran ch ex press ed re g re t th a t because of th e lateness of th e h ou r th ey could not spend m ore tim e asking questions. It is th e opinion of th e Cul tu ra l C hairm an th a t th is lecture should be p u t into som e p erm a n ent form and be added to th e trea su res of th e U N W LA M u seum a t th e In stitu te . P erh ap s it can be m ade into a film so th a t it could be lent out to non-U krain ians so th ey can learn of still an o th er aspect of our h erita g e and culture. K a th erin e L u c y sh y n W h a t h a p p e n e d a t U N W L A E x cu rsio n s are V ery Popular O ur R egional Councils are a r ran g in g successful bran ch ex cursions. The N ew ark Regional Council (M rs. D ora R ak, p re si dent) sponsored an excursion on June 15 to th e Soyuzivka reso rt. The p rogram w as tied in w ith th e an n iv ersary of P rincess Ol ga, ru ler of R u s’-U kraine. M any m em bers attended th is pleasant affair. The second excursion is plan ned by th e New Y ork Regional Council (M rs. O ksana R ak, presi dent) on Septem ber 21, to th e M useum of th e U k rain ian C ath olic Diocese, located in S tam ford, Conn. T his trip will certainly a t tra c t m any m em bers of th e New Y ork area. S t. O lga’s C ultural Fund A ccording to th e U N W LA B oard R esolutions from Jun e 8, 1969 a C ultural F und w as cre ated to collect funds fo r a com p etitio n fo r an icon of St. Olga, w hose 1000th an n iv ersary we are com m em orating. The com pe titio n w as already announced in th e Ju ly issue of O ur L ife m aga zine. O ur m em bers are kindly asked to contribute. M em bership Cam paign Our O rganizational C hairm an M rs. Irene Lew ycka is now p re p arin g a m em bership cam paign w hich will tak e place in Novem- ber-D ecem ber 1969. The plan of th e cam paign w as w orked out by M rs. Ivanna Rozankovsky, our P ro g ram C hairm an. E ach R e gional Council will tr y it ou t on its te rrito ry . Our R itu a l P a s tr y The n ex t m eeting of th e U N W LA C ultural Com mission u n der th e C hairm anship of M rs. N atalie Chaplenko will deal w ith th e p rep aratio n and sym bolism of U krainian ritu a l p astry . T here will be dem onstrations of w ed ding and E a s te r breads and o th er p a stry as well.
