Did you know th a t Toronto has 70 U krainian doctors, 50 U krainian law yers, 20 U k ra in ian pharm acists, 45 U krainian d en tists and 416 U krainian- owned grocery businesses? T h at th ere are in th a t city 49 re s ta u ra n ts, 18 hotels, 15 m otels, 20 b arb er shops, 10 fu rn itu re stores and one shoe facto ry owned and ru n by U krain ians? T h at C ana da in th e course of th e 75 years of U krainian settlem en t th ere has called upon 75 U krainian Canadians to serve as p arliam en ta ria n s on th e provincial as well as federal level ? S enator P aul Yuzyk, form erly a professor of h isto ry and Slavic studies a t th e U niversity of M anitoba, gives a review of U krainian accom plishm ents in C anada and presents a forceful case fo r th e im portance of th e so called “th ird elem ent’ in C an adian life and culture. The “th ird elem ent” is com posed of th e non-B ritish and non-French ethnic groups, and U krainians w ith about h alf of one m illion of population are one of th e top groups in th a t category. S enator Y uzyk’s little book provides a w ealth of fascin atin g d ata. It has appeared sim ultaneously in th e E nglish and F rench editions. One m u st note w ith profound re g re t and some am azem ent th a t in th e U nited S tates w here th e U krainian group is num erically considerably stro n g er th a n in C anada leaders like S enator Y u zyk and handbooks such as th is one are conspicuous by th e ir ab sence. The cerem ony, w hich took place du ring th e 78th A nnual Convention of th e GFW C, was held in Cleveland’s C ultural G ar dens w here th e U krainians, to g eth er w ith 19 o th er n atio n ali ties, have th e ir cultu ral p ark w ith statu es of V olodym yr th e G reat, K hm elnytsky, Shevchen ko, F rank o and C hereshnow sky's sta tu e of U k raine’s forem ost po etess L esya U krainka, w hich w ere viewed by M rs. M agee.. The UNW LA m em bership in Cleve land helped considerably in th e U krainian com m unity e ffo rt to erect th e statu es and have th e ir own park. The GFW C Convention is a t tended annually by delegates of th e U krainian N ational W om en’s League and th e W orld F edera tion of U krainian W om en’s O r ganizations. She delivered h er re p o rt a t th e In tern atio n al Clubs Luncheon on Jun e 5 and w as th u s unable to be p resen t a t th e cerem ony in th e C ultural G ardens.
