Let's Become Acquainted With Ukrainian Culture V acation is over. R efreshed by sum m er’s carefree days we have assem bled fo r our firs t fall m eet ing. A fte r a pleasan t exchange of im pressions from our vaca tions we are ready fo r work. W hat have we planned fo r th is y ea r? W e know th a t we w ant to try som ething new, to strid e forw ard. Surely our new m em bers will have various suggestions. Some will suggest social events, o th ers will recom m end social service projects. Still o th ers will urge closer cooperation w ith A m er ican wom en’s clubs, w hile oth ers will w ant to lim it contacts only to o th er U krainian w om en’s groups. B ut let us consider still an o th er possibility w hich has a l ready been tried by som e of our B ranches. It is sim ply — becom in g acquainted w ith U krainian culture. We can learn about th e cul tu re of a people by becom ing ac. quainted w ith its lite ratu re , a rt and m usic. It would be no easy ta sk if we had to do our own re search and reach our own con clusions. B ut all th is w ork has been g reatly sim plified fo r us. W e already know th e U krainian language and are quite fam iliar w ith U krainian folk a rt. W ith th is sound basis to w ork on, we can readily learn m ore about o th er U krainian a r t form s. Some of our B ranches have already done w ork in th is area. In an o th er p a rt of our m agazine you will read about th e program presented by B ranch 72 in New Y ork C ity d uring w hich M rs. N atalia Chaplenko, U N W LA cul tu ra l chairm an discussed th e life and w ork of U krainian women w riters. The B ranch also hosted th e young a rtis t Slava G erulak, who gave an excellent talk about one of th e oldest a rt form s — th e m aking of ceram ics. Sim ilarly, B ranch 80 in W arren, Mich, has invited several distinguished speakers who will discuss th e various aspects of U krainian cul tu re. These B ranches have found a m eans of utilizing first-h a n d sources fo r collecting in fo rm a tion th a t would norm ally req uire lengthy study. The idea is very good. A talk given by an exp ert and illus tra te d w ith slides is an excellent m ethod of learn in g about U krainian culture. These talk s are given in eith er th e U k rain ian or E nglish languge, depend ing on w hich language is m ore fam iliar to th e m em bership. We have m any specialists in th e various fields of U krainian culture in our own B ranches. They can help us to un derstan d th a t w hich is separated from us th ro u g h th e b a rrie r of language. The com bination of sig h t and sound can tra s m it m uch of th e b eauty of U krainian sp iritu al life. B ut let us not fo rg et th e a rt of th e p rin ted w o rd ! W e can read m uch in tran slatio n and speakers can explain th a t w hich is difficu lt fo r us to understand. The world of ideas is accessible to all. As only one example, UNW LA B ranch 72 plans to p re sent a program on th e ideas of th e U krainian philosopher Sko voroda. T hus our bilingual B ranches are faced w ith w onderful possi bilities and th e freedom to tra n s late th em into in tere stin g and inform ative program s. W hether presented individually or as com plete courses th ey will enrich our lives and b rin g us closer to th e land of our fo refath e rs.
