Vital Issues Concern of GFWC Convention B y M ary D u sh n yck The 77th annual convention of th e GFWC w as held in Boston, M ass. from Ju ne 9-14, w ith 1100 delegates re p resen tin g th e F ede ra tio n ’s 11 m illion world m em bership. M rs. W alter V. M agee w as elected presid ent fo r th e com ing tw o years. The conven tion concerned itself w ith discus sions of th e vital issues of th e day and passed several resolu tions re la tin g to them . Two U krainian m em ber or ganizations of th e GFW C p a rti cipated in th e convention. The W orld F ed eratio n of U krainian W om en’s O rganizations (W F- U W O ), a m em ber of th e G F’s In tern atio n al Clubs, w as re p re sented by its p rogram chairm an, M rs. S tefan ia P u sh k ar, UNW LA president. M rs. M ary D ushnyck rep resen ted th e U N W LA of w hich she is public relations chairm an. She delivered g re e t ings to th e convention from th e UNW LA, an associate GFWC m em ber. T he tw o delegates a t tended sessions and a b re ak fa st fo r in ternation al guests, issued a press release, and p articip ated in th e In tern atio n al F ie sta w ith five “Soyuzanky” from th e Bos ton area who arran g ed a U k rain ian a r t exhibit — M esdam es O. B aranyk, S. W indsor, L. Swys- tu n , O. Fedoriw and T. Decyk — w ith M rs. W indsor dem onstrat- ink “p y san ky ” painting. Also, th e re p o rt of th e W FUW O ap peared in a special com pilation of rep o rts of In tern atio n al Clubs d istrib u ted to all th e delegates a t th e F ie sta program . B ecause th e address of M rs. E. D. P earce, GFW C president, is so tim ely and challenging in its concern w ith to d ay ’s prob lem s, we are re p rin tin g several excerpts fo r th e in te re st of our m em bership. M rs. P earce’s m es sage to th e convention w as ex pressed in th re e moods — sad ness, gladness and hope. M rs. P earce said, “W e are sad because A m erica is in deep tro u ble. T here is a g re a t division am ong our people, and we are al m ost in a s ta te of anarchy. T here is advocacy of open rebellion. W e are sad because w ell-m eaning leaders, m orally offended by w h at th ey believe to be social injustices, have tak en upon them selves th e rig h t to decide w hich law is m orally w rong and to disobey any law w hich th ey consider to be objectionable. T hey call th is civil disobedience b u t in actual practice it is crim i nal rebellion. A continuation of th is type of conduct can only re su lt in anarchy, and possibly p recip itate a violent reaction of com plete distato rsh ip. U r g e n t P rob lem s “The F ederation is sad be cause of th e te rrific increase in crim e in our country a t th e f a s t est ra te ever recorded, and p rin cipally because it is com m itted by young people . . . it is sad be cause of th e use of narcotics, general decline in m oral codes, increased rejection and m isun d erstan ding of re lig io n ; because our young people have been ta u g h t th a t th e free enterp rise system is decadent and th a t col lective secu rity is preferab le — th is has dulled in itiativ e and th w arte d am b itio n ; because th is country has given m ore th a n 150 billion dollars in sup po rt of fo r eign governm ents, w ith o ut any evidence of tangible resu lts or lastin g frie n d sh ip s; because we have p erm itted our stre e ts to be tak en over by rio ters, looters, and snipers, endangering th e very lives and properties of our c itizen s; because som e of th e courts have com prom ised ju stice and given m ore protection to th e crim inals th a n to th e innocen t; because some stu d en ts are a t tem p tin g to seize our u niversi ties and som e teachers have re sorted to strik es to enforce th e ir dem ands; because our citizenry has been continuously inconve nienced and endangered th ro u g h national strik es. The F ederation is sad because th e re h as devel oped th ro u g h o u t th is land a com plete disrespect fo r law, o r der and discipline. B u t th e F ed eratio n is glad, M rs. P earce continued, “because in th is ad m in istratio n th e local clubs and s ta te fed eratio ns con trib u ted nearly eig h t and a h alf m illion dollars tow ard scholar ships and p h ila n th ro p ie s; be cause we m eet th e challenges in a serious and exciting tim e as clubwom en in our role of respo n sibility and leadership in ren dering service to th e F ederation and h u m an ity ; glad th a t reli gious conflicts and in teg ratio n problem s are gradually being so lv ed; th a t th e economic sta tu s of th e individual has im proved. W e are glad th a t we are A m er icans and can live in A m erica, still th e g re a te st country in th e world, in spite of its shortcom ings. T here is n o th ing w rong w ith A m erica th a t a good old- fashioned dose of p atrio tism will n o t cu re!” B uild w ith Y o u th fo r a B e tte r W orld M rs.
