Vital Issues Concern of GFWC Convention By Mary Dushnyck ( PART 2) The keynote speaker on the opening day (June 11, 1968) of the 77th Annual Convention of the General Federation of W om en’s Clubs, held in Boston, Mass. was Dr. Irving Lehrm an, a M ia mi rabbi. He stated the crisis our country faces today “is not eco nomical, social or political in na ture, but rather m oral and spir itual. W hat we need is not a ‘new m orality’ but a strengthening of the old.” The protection of our environ m ent against soil erosion, water and air pollution, and loss of land was the subject of Russell E. Train, president of the Con servation Foundation. He appeal ed to club leaders to transm it their concern into action, as the next 2-4 years are critical. A nother speaker, Ralph N a der, who is responsible for im provem ents in car m anufacture, also believes the chief issue of our tim es is “the destruction of our environm ent . .for if we continue the full-scale abuse of our natural resources we will run out of them or make them un usable.” He called for greater regulation of food inspection and more em phasis on safe auto de sign and use of safety belts in cars, and cited misuse of food coloring, antibiotics and even de tergents in processing of foods. The consumers greatest hope is to w rite their legislators or the W hite House. Community Programs Among its m ulti-faceted proj ects the GF’s educational pro gram w ith Shell Oil Company is especially popular. 1600 clubs en tered the contest this year to survey educational needs of young people and to institute program s to aid them . Tradition al areas are those th a t would further development of acade mic, vocational or cultural endea vors of youth. Prizes totaling $5,000 were won by 3 clubs for fostering education among the needy and in key areas. The aw ard money m ust be used to support educational projects. Even greater aw ards are pre sented in the Community Im provem ent Program of the GF WC and Sears-Roebuck Founda tion. The 2-year program is de signed to stim ulate clubwomen to develop and complete com m unity self-help projects. Em phasis is placed on involving en tire communities in these ef forts. Ten clubs won a total of $'31,500 in awards. The 7th Dis trict Federation of Clubs of In dianapolis won a total of $12,- 000 for its Anti-Crim e Crusade, aimed at school dropouts, and enlisted 50,000 women volun teers. It also obtained better street lighting and better pay standards for police, and held neighborhood cleanups, demon strated household cleaning tech niques and set up a rehabilita tion com m ittee to work w ith persons released from prison. O ther clubs carried out creative educational program s, craft shops, comm unity beautification program s and senior citizen’s centers. One club attracted a doctor and dentist to its com m unity. International winners were the Eulogio Rodriguez, Jr. W om en’s Club of the Philippines, the Guam W omen’s Club and the American W omen’s Club in the Baham as. GF clubwomen were praised by Mrs. Katie Loucheim, Deputy A sst. Secretary for the State De partm ent’s Educational and Cul tural A ffairs, for their contribu tion of “overseas scholarships, civic im provem ent projects and hospitality for foreign students and visitors.” Attack on Pornography and Violence V irginia Graham , TV person ality, told the delegates they have enormous influence and could help in the attack on por nography, sex and violence in movies and television. She also said, “Perm issiveness is one of the reasons for today’s problems w ith the young, and the solu tion is to return to discipline in the home . .” Mrs. W alter V. Magee (Jessie June), newly-elected president of the GFWC, attacked obscen ity in films, TV and magazines, and urged the Federation to continue its battle against this evil even though court convic tions generally “get throw n out on a technical flaw when they get to the high court.” One im m ediate action pro gram is the new adm inistration’s Crusade for M orality in Mass Media . in movies, magazines, television, radio, paperbacks, etc. All clubs will be asked to play a significant role in this movement. International Fiesta A t this 77th GFWC Conven tion it was decided to present the International Clubs program in a new setting instead of the popu lar luncheon followed by interna tional delegates reading their re ports. The innovation this year was an International Fiesta w ith manv international clubs dis playing their folk arts and crafts, literature, etc., w ith a song and dance program , and the reports incorporated in a book let.
