History of Chapter 58, Olena Teliha U K R A IN IA N N A T IO N A L W O M E N ’S L E A G U E Talk g iv en a t 20 th A n n iv e rsa ry D in ner, S unday, F eb ru ary 4, 1968 D e tro it, M ich. — b y O lga K ach ner O’N e ill I t ’s been 20 years since our firs t m eeting in 1947, w hen 12 young (very young!) wom en m et to form a club. In hopes of em ulating our m o th ers’ effective organizational w ork, we, too, becam e affiliated w ith th e U krainian N ational W om en’s League, Soyuz U krai- nok. I th in k our m oth ers w ere ra th e r proud th en, as th ey m u st be now, th a t we, th e “n e x t” gen eratio n chose to follow in th e ir footsteps . . . an affirm atio n of th e ir success. T raditionally, branches of th e U krainian N ational W om en’s League w ere nam ed in honor of a distinguished and outstanding U k rain ian wom an. W e looked fo r a nam e of a contem porary and, as I recall, it w as H alyna Zekan, a new ly arrived young U krainian girl, who suggested Olena Teliha. Olena T eliha . . . a brillian t and m ade objects of folk a r t as E a s t er eggs, em broideries, and cera m ics. Also on display will be p ain tin gs and icons by th e fa m ous M oshynsky fam ily — fa th e r, son Ju rij, and d aug h ter O ksana. In conjunction w ith th e Cre a tiv ity E x h ib it, th e Convention C om m ittee will sponsor an ex h ib it of photo album s and scrap books sen t in by th e UNW LA Regional Councils and B ranches. T his exhibit, th e firs t of its kind co be p resen ted by th e UNW LA will give th e delegates an overall view of th e varied w ork of th e individual B ranches. The various Convention ac ti vities and exhibits will undoubt edly be of in te re st to m any of us. T herefore, we u rg e all our m em bers to atten d th e Conven tion eith er as delegates or guests, and th u s show our con cern w ith th e issues of th e day and ou r in te re st in th e w ork of our organization. sensitive poet who w as executed by th e G estapo a t th e age of 34 (25 years ago th is m onth) fo r h er jo u rn alistic activities on be h alf of h er U krainian N ationalist M ovem ent. H er poem s have th e inten sity , passion and v itality th a t characterizes th e U krainian people — th ey articu late th e ir aspiratio ns fo r freedom -— th ey carry expressions of tenderness, com passion and love — th ey re flect th e sev erity of th a t period of h isto ry during w hich she lived . . . th e period of h isto ry we also share. Olena Teliha, who savored each precious m om ent of life, had w ritte n : Я' палко мрію до самого рання, щоб Ьог зіслав мені найбільший дар: Гарячу смерть — не зимне умірання. She sought a purposeful death as she soug ht a purposeful life . . . a raison d’etre . . . a “reason fo r being.” And, we, too, sought a “reason fo r being” . . . a com m itm ent, an involvem ent, a contribution, a recognition of our U krainian h eritag e w ith a desire to perp e tu a te some of th e custom s and a rts in OUR generation. T h a t’s how it began . . . and th is w here it led: T here is a long list of fin an cial contributions w hich th e club has m ade over th e y ea rs: To U krainian W ar Relief, St. Jo h n ’s C atholic C hurch, U nited Foundation, C rusade fo r Chil dren, N ational N ephrosis Fund, M adam e K isilevska M em orial Fund, U krainian C ultural F oun dation, A m erican M useum of Im m igration, B uilding F und of th e D etro it R egional Council, B eati fication of M etropolitan S heptyt- sky Fund, U k rainian Congress C om m ittee, fo r th e m em orials to T aras Shevchenko and L esya U krainka, and our own special endow m ent — a movie pro jecto r and oth er g ifts fo r th e St. B a sil’s O rphanage in Philadelphia. All of th is, of course, required m oney-raising. The girls decided to m ake ‘m oney g ru bb ing ’ fu n . . . fu n fo r them selves, and fu n fo r th e tick et buyers. If any of you w ere fo rtu n a te enough to a t tend one of th e m any “show s” th a t C hapter 58 presented, I ’m sure you m u st have been im pressed w ith th e ingenuity, cre ative hum or and ta le n t of th is dynam ic group. T here w ere sev eral m in strel shows, V audeville N ight, W estern Revue, H i-Fi Follies, M asquerade P a rty , P um pkin Pie an ’ Apple Sass Show, and A pril in P aris. I t ’s a quirk of fa te th a t a ta le n t scout w asn’t in th e audience or else w e’d have a d ifferen t h isto ry to recount today — th e m em bers would be on B roadw ay, in Holly wood. In stead of th e Carol B u r n e tt Show, w e’d be w atching th e Jean M ateryn Show. In stead of I Love Lucy, it’d be I Love So nia. W ho knows . . . it m ig h t even have been th e U krainian Palace instead of Holywood P a l ace! C hapter 58 can list w ith pride th e donation of various books, such as “S p irit of F lam e,” to u niversity lib ra rie s ; th e show ing of th e film “U krainian C h rist m as C ustom s” ; pysanky dem on stratio n s fo r num erous w om en’s clubs, young people’s groups and a t th e M ichigan S tate F a i r ; sponsoring classes in U krainian folk dances directed by Joann a D raginda K u lch y ck y ; sponsoring classes in cross-stitch in stru ctio n by M rs. Olga K a ra la s h ; and h ostin g M other-D aughter Teas and Luncheons. T hey have supported and p a r ticipated actively in local and national Soyuz U krainok p ro program s ; th e U krainian Y outh League of N o rth A m erica; and th e In tern atio n al In stitu te in De tro it, in p articu lar, th e Old W orld M arket fo r w hich th e club h as annually m ade various U krainian-them ed articles for sale to raise funds fo r th e In s ti tu te.
