On the Threshold of the Convention OUR H E A D IS N O T IN TH E S A N D — H U M A N R IG H TS IS SOYUZ C O N V E N T IO N TH EM E N ineteen-sixty eig ht is th e 20th A n niversary Y ear of H u m an R ig hts as spelled out in th e UN D eclaration, and it is m ost fittin g th a t th e U N W LA chose “F ig h tin g fo r H um an R igh ts H ere and A broad,” as its convention them e. . . . F o r have th e U krainian people no t su f fered m ore in justices and abuses of H um an R igh ts th a n o th ers in th e h isto ry of civilized m an ? A nd as wom en of th e free world are we not concerned w ith th is crucial problem in our n ativ e or adopted cou n try ? Should we not deplore th e lack of dialogue be tw een th e m inorities in our so ciety and tak e some positive ac tio n? Of course we should. T herefore th e Convention will devote tim e to th is issue by fo cusing our atten tio n on th e sub ject th ro u g h a four-pronged panel, nam ely. 1. R eport on hum an injustices around th e world. 2. B reak th ro u g h in fig h t for hum an rig h ts in U kraine, i.e., C hornovil’s “Crim e of T h ou gh t.” 3. F ed eratio n w om en’s role in aiding our country w ith th e cru cial problem s of today. 4. How can wom en of U k rain ian h eritag e m eet th e challenge of today? Key people in G overnm ent and th e U nited N ations, in th e F ed eration of W om en’s Clubs, in th e Y outh League, and in th e U N W LA have been invited as pan elists to speak on th e various phases of th e H um an R ights question. B ut th e challenge be fore us now is th a t all branches of Soyuz U krainok to send th e full q uota of delegates and gu ests to th e convention. As convention p articip an ts you will be proud to m eet and discuss H um an R ig hts w ith th e panel ists and perhap s serve as a source fo r fu tu re dialogue on W e can be assured of a w arm reception a t th e XV U N W LA C onvention w hich will be held on July 5-7 in Chicago fo r it is th e firs t tim e th a t our convention will be held in th is large m etro polis. The officers rep orts, panel discussions, and addresses by distinguished speakers will un doubtedly be of in te re st to all of us, and we will have th e added opportunity of g ettin g acquaint ed w ith th e v ital and b ustling city w hich ex erts such a g re at influence on our life. The prog ram of th e XV Con vention is already set. In addi tion to th e various com m ittee rep o rts th e prog ram will also include in tere stin g and tim ely lectures and panel discussions. The keynote address entitled “Our stand on th e cu rren t situ a tion in U k rain e” will be p re sen t ed on Ju ly 5. In th e evening a panel will discuss “H um an in ju stices around th e w orld,” a topic th a t should give us vital p ointers on how b est to m eet th e challenge of today — th e shock ing violation of hum an rig h ts by th e governm ents of th e world. th is pressin g subject in your own com m unity. W e strongly urge th e bi-lingual, th e E nglish speaking, and th e younger chap te rs of U N W LA to be full p a r ticip an ts a t th is convention. The panel on H um an R ig h ts will be only one of th e Convention h ig h lights. The convention com m it tee is planning a g re a t p rogram not only to en tertain you, b u t also to stim u late your th in k in g and com m unity responsibility th ro u g h provocative and posi tive direction. So, to th e W indy C ity we head come Ju ly fo u rth week-end 1968. A n a sta s ia V olker Vice P resid en t and Panel C hairm an Two panel discussions are scheduled fo r Ju ly 6, 1968. In th e firs t of these, a t 11 a.m. panelists will exchange th e ir views on th e p rogram of th e U NW LA youth B ranches. O r ganizational problem s, chiefly th e role and aim s of th e R e gional Councils, will be exam ined d uring th e second panel discus sion a t 4 p.m. The p rogram will th u s touch on all aspects of th e U N W LA ’s civic activities in th e U nited S tates as well as its a ttitu d e to w ard th e p resen t situ atio n in U kraine. All U N W LA m em bers — regardless w h eth er th ey are pioneers, new im m igrants, or A m erican-born —- will have am ple opportunity to voice th e ir opinion on all problem s p e rta in ing to th e ir organization. T his will insure th e channeling of a v ariety of ideas, w ishes and de m ands tow ard our com m on goal. On Ju ly 7, 1968, th e Conven tion will adopt a list of resolu tions w hich will be based upon th e ideas b ro u g h t out in th e addresses, panel discussions, and com m ittee rep o rts, and will th u s express th e w ishes of th e en tire UNW LA m em bership. In addition to th e business sessions th e Convention p ro gram will also fe a tu re social events. On Ju ly 4 th e UNW LA Regional Council of Chicago will sponsor a dinner and e n te rta in m ent pro gram fo r th e E xecutive B oard and those delegates who w ish to atten d th e affair. The following day a luncheon will be given fo r all th e delegates w hich will give th em an op portunity to become b e tte r acquainted. The official opening of th e W om en’s C reativ ity E x h ib it will tak e place in th e evening.
