H U M A N RIG H TS GROUP An ad hoc group, th e U nited O rganizations of W om en from C entral and E astern E urope was form ed in New Y ork C ity th is sp rin g fo r th e purpose of issuing a jo in t M em orandum in 1968, In tern atio n al Y ear fo r H um an R ights. The p ro ject w as in itiated by UNW LA president, M rs. S te fa n ia P u sh k ar, while UNW LA public relations chairm an, M rs. M ary D ushnyck, was responsible fo r th e various groups joining in th e project. M rs. Irene P a doch, UNW LA vice-president, and M rs. Helen Prociuk, W F U WO in tern atio n al relations offic er, also p articip ated in th e un dertaking. Signed by tw elve organiza tions, including W FUW O w hich rep resen ts U krainian w om en’s groups in eleven countries, th e M em orandum listed violations, article by article, of th e U niver sal D eclaration of H um an R igh ts by th e Com m unists. It w as sent to governm ent rep resentativ es atten d in g th e In tern atio n al Con ference on H um an R igh ts in T e heran, Iran th is spring, as well as to U nited N ations m issions and officials, diplom ats, legisla to rs and organizations th ro u g h out th e world. Also, it w as p er sonally delivered to several key Conference p articip an ts in T ehe ran by Dr. W alter D ushnyck, UCCA rep resen tativ e atten d in g th e Conference. The M em oran dum appeared in th e C ongres sional Record twice, in new spa pers, over th e Voice of A m erica and Radio F ree E urope and o th er m edia. M. D. In F eb ru ary no m eeting was scheduled. Instead, th e reading of good books w as recom m end ed. Books by M aria H alun Bloch, th e poetry of T aras Shevchenko in C. H. A n dru sy sh yn ’s tra n s la tion and of L esya U krain ka in P ercival C undy’s tran slatio n w ere am ong those highly recom m ended fo r individual reading program s. On M arch 7 a m eeting w ith Mr. B. Oblak, stock broker, was held. The topic w as “ Stocks and Inv esting .” On M arch 2 U k rain ian E a ste r egg classes, led by M arie M cElroy, w ere held. On M arch 24 th e m em bers g ath ered a t a S p agh etti D inner. In A pril a to u r was held th ro u g h B onhard A rt F u rn itu re. The to u r m em bers w ere shown slides of decorated in terio rs of hom es and room s. On M ay 9 a M other-D aughter D inner was held. On M ay 30 a ch artered bus trip to Soyuzivka delighted m any m em bers. On June 16 a F a th e r’s Day B runch w ith a visit to T railside M useum was held. On July 5-7 th e U N W LA Con vention was held in Chicago, 111. M em bers enjoyed a C uyahoga R iver Tour on th e Goodtim e B iat on Ju ly 20.
