77th GFW C Convention The G eneral F ederation of W om en’s Clubs held its 77th an nual Convention in Boston, M ass. on June 9-15, 1968, a t which tim e a new E xecutive B oard was elected. GFWC Conventions are held annually b u t th e election of officers is held every second year. In speaking about h er term of office E. D. Pearce, outgoing president, called it “Two P ro g ressive Y ears.” She noted th a t th e excellent w ork done w ith youth in th e “Build Up W ith Y outh F or A B etter W orld” pro gram testified to th e success of GFW C’s activities in th is field. M adam e president stated fu r th e r th a t g re a t atten tio n was al so paid to public affairs, legisla tive cam paigns, in tern atio nal re lations and th e like. P ro gress was also noted in th e field of ed ucation. E arly education fo r chil dren, surveys of th e educational needs of young people, and con tin u in g education fo r m en and women w ere only som e aspects of th e w ork done in th is area. C rusades fo r L ight, linked w ith preserv ativ e m easures ag ain st th e use of drugs and narcotics, w ere led by wom en’s clubs in m any cities. Special em phasis was laid on th e h ealth program , w hich com prised an attac k ag ain st air and w ater pollution, th e prevention of venereal dis eases, and stro n g support for sp o rts program s. The Hom elife D epartm ent, a consum er advis ory body, and th e Fine A rts De p artm en t, w hich financially sup p o rts various cultural u n d erta k ings, also exhibited g re a t ac ti vity. The U krainian N ational W om en’s League of A m erica has been an associate m em ber of GFWC since 1947. On Ju ne 12, 1968, M rs. M ary D ushnyck, Public R elations C hairm an greeted th e Conven tion on behalf of th e UNW LA and gave a b rief synopsis of th e organization’s work. The W orld F ederation of U krainian W om en’s O rganiza tions becam e a m em ber of th e In tern atio n al Section of GFWC in 1966. M rs. S tefan ia P u shk ar, UNW LA presid en t and W FUW O P ro g ram C hairm an, represented th e la tte r organization a t th e Convention in Boston. The U krainian group presented an exhibit of U krainian folk a rt a t th e In tern atio n al F ie sta w hich was held on June 14 fo r all th e ethnic m em bers of th e F ed era tion. The ex hibit w as m ade pos sible largely th ro u g h th e effo rts of UNW LA B ranch 79 of B os ton, whose president, M rs. Olha B aranyk, and o th er officers col lected th e b eautiful em broid eries, w oodcarvings and cera m ics. M rs. Sofia W indsor, B ranch S ecretary, dem onstrated th e a r t of decorating U krainian E a ste r eggs. Thus, U k rainian women not only took p a rt in th e w ork of th e Convention b u t also exh ibit ed th e ir rich cultu ral h eritag e before a large forum of women (1,100 d eleg ates). The U krainian delegation also issued press re leases to local new spapers. M rs. Jessie June M agee, fo r m erly vice presiden t of GFWC, was elected presid en t of th e Fed eration.
