C orb ett-A sh b y th e IAW w hich dates back to 1920. The W orld F ed eratio n of U krainian W om en’s O rganiza tions will continue to m ain tain th is relationship. U krainian wom en’s organizations will carry th e w ork of th e IAW into coun tries of th e ir settlem ent. G ra n t ed equal political rig h ts by th e U krainian N ational Republic in 1918, wom en w ere able to exer cise th em only fo r a sh o rt period of tim e. N evertheless, although deprived of a political sphere of activities, th ey have gained u n paralleled equality w ith m en and carry out th e ir civic respon sibilities in th e ir com m unities to th e fullest exten t. T hey know th a t rig h ts won by or g ran ted to wom en and responsibilities pro fessed b u t not exercised rem ain b u t em pty words. Im plem enta tion of equal rig h ts and equal re sponsibilities is w h at is expect ed of th e world, of th e respective governm ents and of women them selves. P resid ent of th e In tern atio n al Alliance of W om en stated in h er closing speech: “ . . . w hen I see equal rig h ts won and im plem ent ed everyw here and responsibili ties carried out, then, and only then, I shall re s t in peace.” H er dream should become a realistic goal fo r every th in k in g wom an. The W orld W om en’s C onfer ence, called in connection w ith th e W orld Congress of F ree U k rainian s, on N ovem ber 15, 1967, had fo r its them e “U krainian W om en in th e W orld.” D iscus sions centered around th e prob lem s of women living abroad and in U kraine. T here w ere 7 S tanding Com m ittees a t w ork during th e Con ference. The R esolutions w hich w ere adopted pointed out th e need fo r closer cooperation be tw een wom en and th e national and in tern atio n al w om en’s or ganizations, and active p articip a tion in th e world w om en’s m ove m ent to prom ote th e social, eco nom ic and political w elfare of women. The C om m ittee on In te r national A ffairs passed a resolu tion encouraging wom en to tak e p a rt in a cam paign to p u t p res sure on th e ir governm ents and th e m em ber states of th e U N to sign and ra tify th e U niversal C h arter of H um an R ig h ts in or der th a t th e citizens of th ese sta te s and wom en in p articu lar m ay enj oy full in tern atio n al pro tection of th e ir rig h ts. The Conference pointed out th e im p o rtan t role played by U k rain ian women as guardians of th e m oral values of th e ir fam i lies and educators of th e ir chil dren. W hile m o thers living abroad have full freedom to ex ercise these roles, U krainian women in U kraine are often de prived of th e ir m aterial rig h ts and severely punished fo r th e ir effo rts to give th e ir children a national and religious u p b rin g ing. All active m em ber and non m em ber organizations responded to th e call of th e W orld F ed era tion of UWO to review th e p res en t situatio n of th e U krainian w om en’s m ovem ent. The young er generation of wom en born and b ro u g h t up in th e W estern world is j oining th e ran k s of organized wom en w hose overall m em ber ship now stan ds a t 20,000. The w om en’s organizations publish fo u r m agazines and ten other publications which appear reg u larly, and W FUW O conducts a lite ra ry com petition on a y ea r ly basis. W om en are also active in establishing folk a r t m u seum s ; th ey sponsor scholar ships fo r talen ted young wom en and support schools.
