An Important Anniversary In Ja n u a ry 1968 fifty years will have passed since th e IV U niversal w as read in th e capi ta l of U kraine, Kiev. Like th e A m erican D eclaration of Inde pendence, th is docum ent pro claim ed th e independence of th e U krainian nation and th e fo rm a tion of a sovereign sta te ■— th e U krainian N ational Republic. On Jan u a ry 22 U krainians in th e F ree W orld m ark th is h isto ric d ate w ith g re a t solem nity, and p ray ers are offered in th e U. S. Senate and House of R ep resen tativ es for th e enslaved U krainian nation. This y ear th e an n iv ersary of th e proclam ation of U krainian independence will be even m ore im pressive. Only recently th o u sands of U krainians who a tte n d ed th e W orld C ongress of F ree U krainians in New Y ork City strongly p ro tested th e 50-year C om m unist oppression of U k raine. C ongress delegates re p resented U krainian com m uni ties in th e F ree W orld and under th e leadership of distinguished church leaders established th e W orld S ecretariat, w hich will rep resen t them on th e world fo r um. The U krainian wom en held th e ir own W orld Session (N o vem ber 15, 1967) a t w hich they denounced th e subjug atio n of women and fam ilies in U kraine. Close to 500 delegates took p a rt in th e P len ary Conference, and 300 persons attended th e stu dy m eetings of th e W om en’s Ses sion. In all 18 wom en’s organiza tions from various countries of th e F ree W orld w ere represented a t th e Session. The C ongress reaffirm ed our dedication to our u ltim ate goal — an independent and sovereign U krainian sta te — and we shall m eet th e 50th an niversary of U krainian statehood w ith u p lift ed spirits. W e will all observe th is an n iv ersary to g eth er — those of us who cam e to th is country in th e post-W orld W ar II years and those of us who w ere born here. We are all equal ly proud th a t 50 years ago U k raine awoke to freedom and has n ot ceased h er fig h t fo r inde pendence to th is day. The m em bers of th e U krainian W om en’s League of A m erica will observe still ano ther an niversary th is y ear — th e XV UNW LA Convention w hich will be held in Chicago in Ju ly 5-7, 1967. The Convention w hich falls in th e 1968 jubilee y ear will m ark th e 43rd an niversary of U N W LA ’s w ork on b ehalf of U krainian wom anhood T his y ear th e F ree W orld will m ark th e 20th an n iversary of th e H um an R ig h ts D eclaration. T his an n iv ersary provides us w ith an excellent opportunity to com pare our needs and asp ira tions w ith those outlined in th is h istoric docum ent. T his is espe cially tim ely since th e N ational Council of A m erican W om en will th is y ear und ertak e an ex tensive study program of th e Plum an R ig h ts D eclaration and its application to everyday life. F or th e firs t tim e th is year th e N ational Council of A m erican W om en will honor a d istin g u ish ed wom an of each m em ber or ganization.
