U N W L A V IC E -P R E S ID E N T V ISIT S FO LK A R T M U SE U M A N D B R A N C H 72 In th e F all of 1967, B ranch 72 w as honored w ith a v isit from U NW LA V ice-President A n asta sia V olker of D etroit, Mich., and New Y ork Regional Council P resid en t O ksana R ak, a t its h ead q u arters a t th e U krainian In stitu te of A m erica in New Y ork City. The guests w ere welcomed and presented w ith a corsage by Rosalie Polche, P resid en t of B ranch 72, and to g eth er w ith Y vanna P etrow sky of th e In sti tu te, toured th e UNW LA Folk A rt M useum. M rs. Volker, a t seeing th e h istoric and priceless objects, rem inisced and recalled som e of th e stories h er m other related about life in h er native U kraine. She experienced a g re a t th rill a t actually holding an au th en tic ‘Seto” th a t she heard so m uch about. She also viewed a t close range, and snapped aw ay w ith h er cam era, th e rich ru gs and carpets, colorfully em broi dered costum es, tablecloths, sheepskins, decorative ceram ics, in cru stated w oodcarvings, E a s t er eggs, and an elaborate U k rain ian folk w edding cake. The UNW LA Folk A rt M useum of fers a rich cultu ral tre a su ry of U krainian folk a r t fo r a deeper knowledge and un derstan ding of th e a rts and th e ir developm ent th ro u g h historical eras to th e p resen t tim e. As Provisional C hairm an in charge of E nglish-speaking branches, M rs. V olker m et w ith th e m em bership of B ranch 72 in th e evening and stressed th e im p ortance of being a U N W LA m em ber as well as fundam en tal aim s of th e League- She rec om m ended th a t all program s and goals be geared to m eet th e in te re sts of th e m em bers and re quested all to assum e a g re a te r role in leadership. M rs. R ak in h er address com m ented on th e U k rain ian and A m erican bi-lingual aspect of Soyuz U krainok and encouraged those p resen t to perp etu ate our rich U krainian heritage. The constructive criticism and th o u g h ts aired by th e m em bers w ithin th e fram e of th is v isit re sulted in a b e tte r understan ding and established a closer relation ship w ith th e League and R e gional Council. The m em bers of B ranch 72 have shown stro n g evidence th a t being of service to th e League can be fun, enriching and sa tis fying. It gives you opportunities fo r leadership as well as estab lishing lifelong friendships. It teaches cooperation, encourages unselfish donation of your tim e and talen t, and w idens horizons. It also helps you to learn from others in close association, to recognize differences betw een people and respect th e im por tance of individualities. The tria l of tw o R ussian w riters Sinyavsky and Daniel h as received trem endous publi city in th e W est and has aroused world-wide public opinion. The fa te of two young U krainian in tellectuals, Ivan S vitlychny and Ivan Dzyuba, who have been sim ilarly persecuted by th e So viet regim e is still little known in th e free world, despite nu m er ous p ro tests by U krainian w rit ers in exile and o th er U krainian groups. The little booklet edited by Zinkew ych provides excerpts from D zyuba’s and Svitlychny’s w ritings, a good bibliography of th e ir w orks as well as some edi torial com m ent.
