A bstract Painter There are m any talen ted wom en in our B ranches who have achieved recognition in th eir lo cal com m unities b u t rem ain u n known to th e m ajo rity of our m em bership. Such a wom an is K ay Bilovus- L ucyshyn of Bronx, N. Y-C. A talen ted painter, she has p rac ticed h er c ra ft since childhood. The gam e soon becam e a serious hobby, and, finally, serious a rt. H er paintings are ab stract. “E ach a rtis t should p o rtra y th e life, space, tem po. These cannot be adequately represented by re alistic painting. A b stracts and h alf-ab stracts are b e tte r quali fied to express th e th o u g h ts and feelings of the m odern a rtist, and each individual view er can in te rp re t th e paintings to his lik ing.” In addition to her paintings, K ay also does collages. F o r these she keeps a special collection of various m aterials in unusual shapes and sizes from which she creates exciting com positions. She also m akes assem blages by “a new technique which utilizes m etallic cutouts-” The U krainian public has al ready had an oportunity to view K ay ’s paintings a t th e W om en’s A rt E xhibition which is held an nually in New Y ork C ity in Oc tober. She also exhibits inde pendently in various a rt gal leries, m ost notably a t Gallery No. 2 a t th e H udson M useum in Yonkers. In order to insure th e p erp etu ation of our organization, to help keep a young, en th u siastic and vital outlook, we are expanding our branch to include a “Junior L eague.” W e welcome as m em bers young ladies of U krainian background a t least 16 years old- W e extend th e sam e inv itatio n to th e m ore “m a tu re ” women. The book’s appearance will depend to a large ex ten t on th e num ber of ads th a t are collected. * A t th e C onvention’s E x h ib it books by women au th o rs and ob jects of U krainian folk a r t will be displayed. F o r th e firs t tim e an exhibit of scrapbooks and pic tu re album s of R egional Councils and C hapters will also be p re sented. C hapters are urged to b rin g along th e ir scrapbooks in order th a t th ey m ay be included in th e exhibit. * The XV-UNW LA Convention is not fa r aw ay. I t will be held on Ju ly 5-7 1968 in Chicago a t th e Conrad H ilton Hotel. Con sider th e possibility of sending your delegates to th e Conven tion.
