O ur organization w as founded 43 years ago in New Y ork, and today consists of 100 branches, 7 regional councils and head q u arte rs in Philadelphia. W e are happy to have th is opportunity to convey to your 77th Conven tion delegates our g re a t ad m ira tion fo r your w ork and your out stan d in g achievem ents. O ur m u tu al cooperation on all levels of our endeavors h as proven re w arding and invaluable fo r our m em bership, and we tre a su re th e privilege to exchange and evaluate inform ation w ith th e F ed eratio n concerning th e p res ervation of our cu ltu ral h e rit age. O ganizer and m oderator of th is panel w as M rs. A n astasia Volker, V ice-President. A question period followed. The questions of th e delegates, w ere aim ed a t th e activ ity of in dividuals in defense of hum an rig h ts. T he answ er w as an ad vice to join th e C aptive N ations C om m ittees and o th er non-gov ernm ental organizations, to ask action from our senators and congressm en and to deal w ith economics, as an im p o rtan t fac to r in political life. A valuable advice w as given in re g ard to A m erican situ atio n — to en ter in relations w ith an organiza tion of N egro women. U k rain ians su ffered h ard sh ip s sim ilar to slavery and should u n der stan d th e strife to equality. Inspired by th is ad m in istra tio n ’s them e to Build w ith Y outh fo r a B etter W orld, we have de voted m uch of our effo rts th is y ear to fo sterin g b e tte r com m unications w ith g rad u ates and young m others of U k rain ian de scent. W e succeeded in organiz ing 12 new ju n io r branches and are in itiatin g in tere stin g educa tional and social service prog ress. W e have 18 day centers fo r sm all children and 2 social serv ice centers in Chicago and P h ila delphia. In th is H um an R ig h ts Y ear, we also in itiated an ad hoc com m ittee of 12 organizations of w om en from C entral and E a s t ern Europe, w hich issued a Me m orandum on violations of H u m an R ights. W e w ere pleased to read of M rs. P earce’s v isit to R adio L ib e rty in M unich w here she learn ed a t first-h a n d th ro u g h letters received from countries behind th e Iron C urtain, including U kraine, th a t m essages beam ed to captive nations are g ettin g th ro u g h and bring ing hope to th e captive peoples under Com m unism . L ast y ear in an interview by Voice of A m erica, I spoke to th e wom en of U kraine of our close relationship w ith th e G eneral F ederatio n and w h at th e F ed er ation m eans to th e wom en of th e world. O ur 15th convention will be held in Chicago on Ju ly 4th. Our m otto will be to striv e fo r reali zation of H um an R ig h ts in our country and in th e whole world. T his is a challenge fo r us all, and we are sure we shall find m oral sup p ort from th e G eneral F ederation. T hank you from th e U k rain ian N ational W om en’s League of A m erica. N E W S FROM U N W L A B R A N C H 80 IN W A R R E N , M ICH IG AN B ranch 80 has been p ro g res sing b eautifully under th e capa ble leadership of its presiden t M rs. Louise Saks, who, incident ally, is going on an o th er ja u n t — th is tim e to Israel and th e Holy Land. On F eb ru a ry 19 — th e B ranch m em bers enjoyed a delightful B runch a t th e H oliday Inn and review ed th e p rogram and th e activities of th e B ranch fo r th e firs t six m onths of its Club year.
