This or g anization’s 6,600 m em bers in 158 B ranches sen t 500 delegates to th e Convention. LUCW is a founding m em ber of W FUW O. The N ational League com prises 4 D iocesan seats from V ancouver to Quebec and th ey have th e ir Conventions annual ly. N ational, how ever, has its Convention every th re e years. T here was a span of 4 y ears th is tim e due to th e im p o rtan t events in organization and th e country. D uring th is period of fo u r y ears th e stress w as laid on im provem ent and education in tain contact w ith in ternation al w om en’s organizations. T h eir m ain objective is to help reg ain th e freedom w hich Byelo ru ssia enjoyed up until th e end of th e E ig h teen th C entury, w hen, as an independent state, it w as called th e G reat D uchy of L ith uan ia. The nam e B yelorus sia w as forced upon th em by th e R ussian occupant in th e N in eteenth C entury. The p re s en t chairm an of th e C entral or ganization is M rs. V era B artul. The above natio n ality groups plus n ations th a t are w ithin th e USSR such as Georgia, Byelo russia, and U kraine, und er th e nam e of U nited O rganization of W om en fro m C entral and E a s t ern Europe, sen t a m em orandum to th e G overnm ent R epresenta tives atten d in g th e In tern atio n al C onference on H um an R ig h ts in T eheran, Ira n A pril 22-M ay 13, 1968, in w hich th ey listed all th e violations of th ese hum an rig h ts. They called atten tio n to th e fa c t th a t altho th e G eneral A ssem bly adopted a R esolution in 1952 called ‘The R ig h ts of Peoples and N ations to Self-De term in atio n ” th is fundam ental rig h t, w hich is a prerequ isite of a full enjoym ent of all hum an rig h ts, has been denied to th e people under th e Soviet rule. LUCW is also a m em ber of th e W orld U nion of C atholic W om en’s O rganizations and sen t h er delegation to its C ongress held in Rome in October 1967. In 1967 C anada m arked h e r 100- years of existence and fam ous EX PO w as held in M ontreal, Canada. LUCW took an active p a rt in th ese celebrations. T here w as a special W om en’s C om m it tee created to prep are U k rain ian W eek a t EX PO . E ach wom en’s organization p rep ared its special day. One of th e m any p ro jects of th e League is fo sterin g of U krainian folk a rt. In th is w ay th ey p rep are exhibits, shows of applicable U krainian designs on dresses and m aking of E a ste r eggs. B ut th e larg e st p ro ject in th is line are M useum collections, sta rte d in Diocesan centers — Edm onton, Saskatoon, W innipeg and Toronto. The m ain aim of LUCW is stren g th en in g of C h ristian life of th e ir m em bers, support of U krainian church, prom ulgation of U krainian culture, liftin g of educational talen ts in wom en th e help fo r U krainian people in distress. S T R IF E FOR H U M A N RIG H TS H E R E A N D A B R O A D The E nglish Panel a t th e XV UNW LA Convention w as held on Ju ly 5, 1968 a t 6 p.m. Its them e w as ST R IFE FO R H U M AN RIGHTS H E R E AND ABROAD. The firs t address w as deliver ed by M rs. Olive R em ington Goldm an from th e U N A ssocia tion in U rbana, 111. She is an educator, au th o r and trav eler and con trib utor of U nited N a tions Review. A t th e s ta r t she presented to th e audience a clip ping containing th e declaration of independence of U kraine pub lished in th e New Y ork Tim es on th e occasion of th e W orld C ongress of F ree U krainians in N ovem ber 1967. It shows th a t she follows th e political events of th e sub jug ated nations. She spoke on th e topic ‘In ju stices in H um an R ig h ts” th ro u g h o u t th e world. M r. M yron K uropas of Chica go had th e topic “H um an R igh ts in U kraine.” His ideas, printed in excerpts in th e editorial, cov ered in ju stices com m itteed in U kraine. “The Role of F ederation W om en on T his P roblem ” w as trea ted by M rs. Zaio W oodford Schroe- der from th e GFWC. She stated th a t th e hum an rig h ts as p ro claim ed by th e D eclaration of Independence of U.S.A., w ere en joyed and practiced in U. S. th ro u g h centuries, are still th e dream of m any countries. T here fo re a crusade fo r hum an rig h ts is to be launched and women could be in stru m en tal in it. M iss Olga S h u ster spoke on th e them e “How Can We, W om en of U krainian H eritag e M eet th e Challenge of T oday.” She outlined several directions. F irst, she pointed out th a t our activities should be aim ed a t th e education of our m em bers, and th e im proving of our leadership. D em ocracy is an idea and we have to stu d y it thoroughly. Then we could serve our own com m unity and be helpful in th e solving of A m erican problem s too.
