On th is occasion a sm all m eeting w ith U krainian wom en w as a r ranged. It w as held in th e U k rainian In stitu te of A m erica. It was attended by B oard m em bers of W FUW O and UNW LA — M rs. H elen L ototsky, Vice- P resident, M rs. H elen S. P ro ciuk, In tern atio n al R elations C hairm an, M rs. S tefania P u sh k ar, U N W LA P resident, M rs. M aria D ushnyck, Public R ela tions C hairm an, and M rs. Irene Padoch, V ice-President. The talk centered on th e rela tions of th e W orld F ederation of U krainian W om en’s O rganiza tions w ith th e In tern atio n al W om en’s Alliance, w hich are on th e basis of F ra te rn a l O rganiza tions. A fa r m ore im p o rtan t and sig n ifican t break in isolation of ethnic wom en’s organizations oc curred th ro u g h th e ir own m em bership, younger women, born or b ro u g h t up and educated in th e new countries. The new m em bers b rin g w ith th em new tren d s and new in terests. T hey conti nue to be deeply attach ed to th e culture and trad itio n s of th e ir hom elands, how ever, th ey no longer have have as close ties w h ith th e ir hom elands as th e older m em bers had. T hey often no longer speak th e language. T hese are th e m em bers th a t search intensively fo r new w ays of ad ju stin g th e old w ays of th in k in g and living to th e new ones. M ajority of th em w orks and it is h ard to find now adays am ong th em a trad itio n al type of a club w om an whose life and in tere sts centered around and w ere devoted alm ost exclusively to a w om en’s organization. T here is no longer tim e avail able, and w hatever tim e is left to d ay ’s w om an w ishes to use it as effectively as possible. F u r th erm o re she gains a lot of s a t isfaction from h er daily w ork and no longer sees w ork in an organization as a sole source of satisfactio n giving h er a sense of achievem ent, and success. The la tte r is in a strik in g opposition to attitu d e s and feelings of a num ber of older m em bers who often com pensated loss of th e ir social position or professional stan d in g w ith successes on th e organizational field. (It m u st be pointed out th a t th e above m en tioned changes occur in alm ost all w om en’s organizations, re gardless of th e ir origin). Also, th e re are no longer spectacular goals to be achieved, no t longer dazzling successes to be talked about. W h at rem ains is a h ard day’s w ork in depth. New w om an does no t refuse to w ork fo r h er com m unity wel fare, how ever she is also asking w h at a com m unity can do fo r her, how a com m unity could contribute to h er w elfare. She m ay see th e need to focus h er th in k in g a t h e r own w e lfa re : b e tte r education fo r herself, b e t te r jobs, tak in g up and discharg ing m ore responsibilities as a citizen. She will eventually won der about h er own organization devoting a g re a t deal of a tte n tion and w ork to satisfy every one’s needs so little to h er own. The questions asked point out th e need fo r re-evaluating and broadening of old goals and pro gram s. W hile th is question is of p rim ary im portance in ethnic wom en’s organizations it is th e feeling of th is w riter th a t in a m ajo rity of w om en’s organiza tions th is question is of no less er im portance. W elfare of wom en, th e ir personal developm ent, help tow ard achieving h ig h er sta tu s in fam ily and society is, or a t least should be a common goal of all w om en’s organiza tions on national and in te rn a tional level. W orking fo r com m on goals should b rin g about b reak in isolation on all levels, b e tte r u nd erstan d in g am ong all women and cooperation of w om en's organizations, regardless of th e ir national origins. Focus on w om an h erself and h er needs should not be consid ered as d eteren t to com m unity work, to national pride, or as sel fish. A b e tte r enlightened w om an m eans a b e tte r com m unity and ultim ately a b e tte r world. H elen S.
