Ukrainian Participation at GFWC Convention B y M ary D u sh n yck U krainian wom en’s organiza tions w ere rep resen ted a t th e 76th annual convention of th e G eneral F ederatio n of W om en’s Clubs in San Francisco th is year by tw o delegates. M rs. S tefania P u sh k ar, prog ram com m ittee chairm an of th e W orld F ed era tion of U krainian W om en’s O r ganizations (SFUZO in U krain ian) and president of th e U N W LA, rep resented SFUZO, while M rs. M ary D ushnyck rep resented tre UNW LA, of w hich she is public relations chairm an. Also, M rs. M aria H ru d k a of “ Soyuz U krainok” of A u stralia p articip ated in th e GFW C Con ference in Sydney w hich M rs. E d g ar D. Pearce, president of th e GFW C, attended w ith a del egation she led on an in te rn a tional goodwill to u r of th e South Pacific a t th e conclusion of th e convention. M rs. Y aroslava O renczuk, presid en t of UNW LA B ranch 62 in San Francisco, a t tended th e In tern atio n al Clubs luncheon d uring th e convention. The U N W LA has been a m em b er of th e GFW C fo r several years as a national organization, w ith associate m em bership, while SFUZO, w ith 14 m em ber organizations from 10 countries, becam e a m em ber of GFW C’s In tern atio n al Clubs in 1966. T here are 160 in ternation al clubs from 60 countries in th e GFWC, w hich has a to tal m em bership of 11 У2 m illion in 15,500 clubs in every sta te of th e Union and around th e globe. The convention’s colorful In tern atio n al Clubs luncheon w ith gay m usic and delegates a ttire d in n ative costum es is alw ays a popular event, atten d ed by about 1200 delegates. This y ear th e re w ere 28 in tern atio n al delegates repo rtin g , who w ere each allowed 5 m inutes. M rs. P u sh k ar in re p o rtin g on SFUZO explained initially th a t it was organized in 1948 to rep resen t U krainian wom en in exile and speaks in behalf of our wom en in U kraine who under th e dic tato rsh ip of Soviet rule cannot speak fo r them selves. She out lined th e wide v arie ty of p ro j ects w hich it sponsored during th e y ear — sem inars fo r m o th ers and teenag ers to help m oth ers w ith to d ay ’s youth problem s, program s fo r preschool educa tional day centers conducted by U krainian w om en’s organiza tions in 10 countries, re ad ers’ clubs fo r adults and children to support our lite ra ry talen ts as m any U krainian w riters are p er secuted fo r th e ir independent thinking, helping re tu rn ees to U kraine from exile in Siberia, who have difficulty finding hom es and em ploym ent and are th u s often forced to re tu rn to Siberia, by sending th em m edi cine and food parcels. M rs. P u sh k ar enum erated n a tional and in tern atio n al confer ences planned fo r th is year, such as a regional conference in B ra zil, p articip atio n in W orld Con gress of F ree U k rain ians in NYC, rep resen tatio n a t In te r national Alliance of W om en’s Congress in London, and so on. In conclusion, M rs.
