H ow ever, social a ffa irs are planned as well. Two a ffa irs w hich will h ig h lig h t th e Session are a youth ta le n t show and a fashion show of m odern wom en’s and children’s clothing w hich has been adorned w ith U krainian em broidery. The y outh ta le n t show is be ing p rep ared by th e W FUW O B oard in cooperation w ith th e a rtistic circles of New Y ork and vicinity. The perform ers will in clude young vocalists and m usi cians, as well as dancers and talen ted young d ram atic actors and actresses. The fashion show will be sponsored by th e U N W LA R e gional Council of New Y ork, who will h o st th e Session. A special C om m ittee is in charge of plan ning and p rep arin g th e Session. IN A U G U RA TIO N OF N EW U N W LA BRANCH The in au g u ratio n of th e new U N W LA B ranch 80 in W arren, M ichigan, w as held on Ju n e 25, 1967. The U N W LA H ead qu ar te rs w as rep resen ted a t th e a f fa ir by M rs. A n astasia Volker, Vice P residen t, who presented th e B ranch M em bership Scroll to B ranch P residen t, M rs. Lou ise Sacks. R epresentatives of o th er U N W LA B ranches in De tro it also atten d ed th e in au g u ra tion. This y e a r’s Congress, held d urin g A u g u st 1-10 in London, p repared th e m em bership fo r th e observance of a m om entous event •— th e 20th an n iv ersary of th e D eclaration of H um an R ights. To m ark th e occasion th e In tern atio n al W om en’s Alli ance resolved to b rin g to th e public forum th e problem of dis crim ination ag a in st women. T herefore th e Congress exam ined th e economic position of wom en and resolved to dem and equal pay fo r women, th e rig h t to education, and professional counseling fo r those wom en choosing vocations. The principal resolutions adopted by th e Congress w ere: —to req u est from th e UN th a t women be included in th e m em bership of th e R egional Econo m ic C om m issions; —to req u est from th e U N spe cial research on th e w om an’s role in th e economy of a given c o u n try ; —to req u est from IW A m em b er organizations professional counseling fo r wom en choosing v a c a tio n s; -—to encourage wom en to a t tain technical and h ig h er educa tion. The W orld F ed eratio n of U k rain ian W om en’s O rganizations w as invited to tak e p a rt in th e C ongress as a fra te rn a l organi zation. Public relations ch a ir m an, M rs. H elen Prociuk re p re sented W FUW O a t th e Con gress. She w as already fam iliar w ith IW A, fo r in 1955 she took p a rt in th e Congress of th e In tern atio n al W om en’s Alliance in Colombo, Ceylon. T his y e a r’s C ongress p resented M rs. P rociuk w ith th e opportu nity to renew old frien dships and to utilize h er professional train in g . The 20th an n iv ersary of th e D eclaration of H um an R ig h ts is an equally im p o rtan t date fo r U k rain ian wom anhood. The In tern atio n al W om en’s Alliance has noted th e fa c t th a t m any resolutions, signed by th e U N G eneral A ssem bly, have never been ra tifie d by th e individual nations. F u rth erm o re, despite intensive effo rts m ade by th e UN, law lessness, sentencing w itho u t b en efit of co urt trials, and assassinatio n s are everyday events w hich in m any instances are not prosecuted. Thus, it be comes evident th a t despite th e fa c t th a t 20 years have passed since th e ra tific atio n of th e Dec laration, it is n o t y et com pletely operable. To p u t th e D eclara tion into full w orking effect should, th erefo re, be th e goal of w om en’s organizations. F o r us, th e an n iv ersary of th e D eclaration also offers innum er able opportunities. W e can and should inform th e countries of th e world of a t least some of th e atrocities w hich w ere com m itted by th e R ussians in U kraine in th e 1920’s and w hich in fact, continue to be com m itted even to th e p resen t day. How m any fam ilies to rn a p a rt by th e w ar are still sep arated today, som e 25 years la te r? Can a qualified w orker in U kraine go to church or baptize his child? Inn um er able fa cts show evidence th a t rig h ts com m only accepted in th e F ree W orld are denied th e citi zens of th e USSR, altho u gh th is country signed th e D eclaration along w ith o th er countries 20 y ears ago. O ur contacts on th e in te rn a tional forum should help us to show before th e w orld th ese shocking instances of in ju stice and persecution. НАШЕ ЖИТТЯ — ЖОВТЕНЬ, 1967 17
