T h e la te L u c y M illig a n IN MEMORY OF A F R IE N D W e m et h er fifteen years ago w hen U N W LA applied for m em  bership in th e N ational Council of W om en of th e U.S. M rs. Lucy M illigan w as th en a B oard m em  ber. It w as a pleasure to discuss our application. H er kind sm ile encouraged us to talk while h er keen eyes scrutinized our words. W e fe lt a t ease w ith h er from th e f irs t m om ent. O ur application w as accepted and from th en on M rs. M illigan becam e a friend of our organiza tion. W e alw ays found h e r friendly and sym patetic to all our problem s. I rem em ber our f irs t re p o rt a t th e A nnual M eeting in Octo ber, 1952, and our firs t Congress of th e In tern atio n al Council of W omen. She attended our Conventions, re p resen tin g th e N ational Coun cil of W om en or th e G eneral F e  d eration of W om en’s Clubs. She said th e re w ere “no m inority groups b u t people are all alike” and believed in th e brotherhood of m an. She spoke a t our form al opening of th e U krainian Folk A rt M useum on A pril 9, 1967, even th ou gh she w as ill and wTeak. “U krainian women, as I know them , tr y to preserve th e ir id en tity ,” she said in h er ad dress. “I recognize th e ir effo rts and I adm ire th e ir endeavors.” The life of Lucy M illigan was one steady e ffo rt to help people and to encourage th em to striv e fo r b e tte r u nderstanding. In th e m id-tw enties she w orked as chairm an of th e d ep artm ent of child w elfare of th e New Y ork C ity F ederation of W om en’s Clubs and w as a founding m em  ber of th e N ational Conference of C h ristian and Jew s in 1928. M any pro jects followed, and in each she displayed h er unique courage and ability. In recen t years she w as b est known fo r h er w ork w ith th e A m erican C ancer Society. She traveled to every s ta te in th e country, addressing w om en’s groups and m obilizing support fo r th e society’s educational and o th er cam paigns. A t h er death M rs. L. M illigan w as president of th e Golden Rule Foundation and on th e Boards of th e A m erican Council fo r N a tionalities Service and Citizens fo r a Q uieter New York. She died a t th e age of 80. B ranch 53 (A storia, New Y ork) m et in early Septem ber fo r a business m eeting a t th e hom e of our president, M rs. Al exandra R iznyk. A fo rm a t of cultu ral and fu nd -raisin g a ffa irs w as introduced and voted upon by th e m em bership. In October, M rs. A n astasia Volker, U N W LA V ice-President, visited th e B ranch a t th e hom e of M rs. D o rette Gallan. It w as a m ost in tere stin g and inspiring evening fo r all. M any aspects of UNW LA life w ere discussed and ideas w ere introduced by both M rs. V olker and th e m em bership, th u s opening up a tw o-w ay chan nel of cooperation.
