Opening of Ukrainian Folk Art Museum On F rid ay evening, A pril 7, a preview show ing of th e M useum w as held fo r A m erican and e th nic w om en’s organization lead ers and UNW LA re p resen ta tives, from N. Y., N. J. and P ennsylvania. In her opening re m arks, M rs. P u sh k ar w arm ly welcomed th e guests and in tro duced M rs. D ushnyck, program com m entator, who presented th e A m erican and ethnic guests, am ong whom w ere M rs. Louis Robbins, P residen t of N ational Council of W om en of U. S., M rs. W. H antel-W eiss, C ultural A t tache of th e G erm an C onsulate G eneral in NYC, Dr. M arion P re m inger, Consul G eneral of Ga bon, M rs. Jan in a Sim utis, w ife of th e L ith u an ian Consul in NYC, M iss In d ira M ahadevan, social w orker from India who is stud yin g fo r h er Ph.D . a t th e on th e subject in both U k rain ian and E nglish, and now we also have a Folk A rt M useum . The inform ation is th e re a t our fin g ertip s — we need only tak e th e tim e and e ffo rt to learn it. Only a fte r we become tru ly know ledgeable in th e various form s of our folk a r t can we satisfacto rily acquaint th e A m erican public w ith it. The m a tte r is too im p o rtan t to over look. M rs. Lidia B urachynska, editor of OUR L IF E , w as also present. Mr. Dzus greeted th e ladies and than ked all those whose ef fo rts had m ade th e M useum opening possible. M rs. H elen Lo totsk y, H onorary P resid en t of th e UNW LA, asked, “Did you ever have a dream w ith a nickel in your p ocket?” and proceeded to relate th e U N W LA ’s effo rts to have an ethnographic U k rain ian folk a rt collection and th e fulfillm ent of th e dream w ith th e late M r. Wm. Dzus offering th e UNW LA several room s for a m useum in th e im posing In stitu te building on New Y ork’s F ifth Avenue and 79th S treet. A m usical program w as p re sented fo r th e guests. M ary Le saw yer, soprano, form erly w ith th e NYC C enter O pera Co., sang 2 folk songs and an aria, accom panied by Olga D m ytriw — Ste- povy’s “Za Dum oyu D um a” and Lysenko’s “Sadok V yshneviy” (both based on Shevchenko po em s) and M ariltsia’s aria from L ysenko’s “T aras B ulba,” based on Hohol’s prose. M rs. L esaw yer w as a ttire d in a folk costum e of th e B orschiv region. Rom a P rym a, in tern atio nal ballet in terp retiv e dancer and choreographer, perform ed tw o dances — “Ikon,” based on B y zantine m osaic ikons com bined in fluid p ra y er dance m ove m ents, set to B arvinsky’s “Cho ra le” m usic, and “V esela Sva- k h a,” a stylized folk num ber danced to M oussorgsky’s “Hop ak ” m usic. F o r th e “Ikons” dance M iss P ry m a wore an ela b orate costum e created fo r h er by Mme. K arinsk a and copied from th e 10th cen tu ry B yzan tine era, and fo r th e gay hopak a U krainian p easan t costum e. M aria Cisyk, a young p ian ist soon to g rad u ate from th e Juil- liard School of M usic w here she is study ing under 3 scholarships, teaches piano and appears as soloist and accom panist. M iss Cisyk played th e firs t m ovem ent from “The Shevchenko S uite” by L y atu sh y n sk y and Choum e by Y akim enko, based on th e folk song, “I S hum yt і H ude.” She was attire d in a gown w ith U k rain ian em broidery. The guests w ere th en tak en u p stairs to view th e M useum . D uring th e to u r Mr. Dzus p re sented M rs.
