FROM A YEARBOOK “Let us apply ourselves and work for a cause.” This is the m otto of the 1966/67 Yearbook of the 37 UNW LA Branch in Detroit. L et’s look through the Club Year events which are proof of the hard work and zeal put in by the members. The Club Year started in Sep tember, 1966. Mrs. Stella Fedyk, President, was h ostess at the m eeting. A Ukrainian blouse project was started at th is time. In October a Regional Council membership drive was put un der way. In connection w ith this Mrs. A nastasia Volker’s article “Why Join?” in the Regional Council Bulletin was discussed in detail. Mrs. Anna Nakoneczny was the h ostess of th e m eeting. Plans for a Games Party and an Old World Market were dis cussed. In November the Children’s Book Fair and the Old World Market kept the members busy. H ostess of the m onthly m eeting was Mrs. A nastasia Volker, the Branch’s historian. A travel film of Ukraine was shown by Mrs. Louise Saks. In December 1966 th e Chap ter ’s g ifts to Community A gen cies were prepared. H ostess of the m eeting was Mrs. Laverne Veilleux. Plans for the tradition al Sviat-Vechir were made and members brought canned goods for Christmas baskets. In January 1967 the tradition al Sviat-Vechir united the m em  bers and their fam ilies. Mrs. Ann Strokon, the Membership Chair man was h ostess of the m eeting in her Starlite Restaurant. All were delighted w ith the tradi tional food and the charming at mosphere. In February an evening was ied from linens imported from Eastern Europe and printed em broidery from Canada. Miss Bartkiw and her s ta f f are also working on dress and coat en sembles made from hand-em- broidered Indian bedspreads and slim sh ifts from embroidered Indian stoles. dedicated to the poetry of Lesya Ukrainka, our fam ous patron. Mrs. Sophie Small, the Rec. Sec retary, was h ostess of the m eet ing. A Games Party is planned for March and decoration of Easter eggs will be demonstrated. Mrs. A gatha Osadchuk, the Vice- President, is hostess of the m eet ing. A film on cancer will also be shown. In April the main them e will be “W ash and Fabric Care,” w ith a dem onstration to be pre sented by D etroit Edison. Mrs. Mary Husak will be h ostess of the m eeting. In May the Annual M eeting of the Branch is scheduled. H ost ess of the M eeting will be Mrs. Ann Stechison. In June the Club’s Year will end w ith the installation of new officers. H ostess of th e m eeting will be Mrs. Myrtle Slaby. Thus a year of good friendship will come to a close. The Board members were: Mrs. Stella F e dyk, President, Mrs. A. Osad chuk, Vice-President, Mrs. So phie Small, Rec. Sec’y, Mrs. Mary Krafton, Treasurer. Audi tors were: Mesdames Jennie Borden, Mary Husak and Anna Nakoneczny. It should be noted that U N  WLA Branch 37 now has an A uxiliary in Ann Arbor, Mich. This A uxiliary Branch is com prised of eleven young women, headed by Mrs. A ssy a Humecky, Chairman, and Mrs. Lubomyra Chapelsky, Secretary. PROMINENT UK RA INIAN FROM BRAZIL GUEST OF UNW LA In November, 1966 Miss Nadia Schulan of Prudentopolis, Brazil visited the United States. She was on a tour of home economics institu tions w ith a group of home economics principals. A school principal herself, she got a scholarship from the Interna tional Development A gency in USA. She was delighted with what she saw here in th is field. Besides her home economics school in Prudentopolis, Miss Schulan also conducts the St. Olga Institute, a boarding home for girls of Ukrainian descent. A t the institution the girls are taught Ukrainian songs and dances and acquire a lot of knowledge about the country of their forefathers. W hile in Philadelphia, Miss Schulan discussed her work w ith UNW LA Board members, and m et w ith members of the local St. Mary’s Sodality. GREETING TO GI’s IN VIETNAM A t our last December m eet ing we wrote a collective Christ mas greeting to the soldier son of our member Mrs. Marie Jur- kewych. Before long came his answer which we would like to share w ith other UNWLA m em  bers: Dear Women of the Ukrainian National Women’s League Br. 42 in Philadelphia, Pa. Thank you very much for the beautiful Christmas card which was sent to me by members of your organization. To all of those who signed the card, I would like to express sincere feelin gs of thanks that I felt, knowing that their thoughts were w ith me during the holiday season and for m y safe return home, which with the grace of God, should be in A u gust of this year. Marine Vietnam UNW LA MUSEUM EXHIBIT The Museum E xh ib it of Uk rainian Folk Art, located at the Ukrainian American In stitu te at 2 E. 79th St. in N ew York City, will be opened to the public on April 7, 1967. The Museum E xhibit includes a rare collection of Ukrainian folk art purchased before World War II in the native country.
