UNWLA PUBLIC RELATIONS WORK PLAN FOR 1966-67 Pu blic R elation s C om m ittee o f th e E x e c u tiv e Board C O N F E R E N C E OF TH E U N W L A R E G IO N A L COUNCIL IN N E W YORK CITY On Dec. 11, 1966 a Conference for Press Chairman of the U N  WLA Branches was held in New York City. Mrs. Helen Prociuk, Press Chairman of the Regional Council, invited noted press spe cialists to address the workshop. The list of speakers included: Mr. Ivan Kedryn of “Svoboda,” Mr. Oleh Zwadiuk from Radio “Svoboda,” Mr. George Tamar- skyj, film producer, and Mr. Sviatoslav N ow yckyj, TV editor. Their instructional lectures were rounded out by Mrs. Lydia Bura- chynska, “Our L ife” editor, who spoke about the duties of a Press Chairman. The program gave an in terest ing overview of modern commu nication and encouraged the Press Chairmen to adapt new m ethods accordingly. The ad dress of Mr. Oleh Zwadiuk, one of the gu est speakers, is printed in th is issue. Special stress was laid on keep ing a history of a Branch in the form of paper clippings, photos, programs and tickets. copy in which paragraphs are continued on the next page, in stead of ending each page w ith a complete paragraph. Rewrite men frequently have to work hard on the story to make it interesting. Some w rite releases in a hurry and send them out incomplete. Remember, keep news item s brief and complete. This will ensure your g ettin g your press releases into print. 1. Maintain and develop con tact w ith two American N ation al Boards — the National Coun cil of Women of U. S. and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs by taking part in their Conventions, Educational For ums, Conferences and similar a f fairs. Inform their membership about our affairs at such m eet ings and in their bulletins. 2. Maintain and develop con tacts with the Federation of Bal tic Women and its member or ganizations. Inform them of our activities and encourage them to co-operative affairs. 3. Strive for contacts w ith oth er national groups for greater mutual understanding and co- operative action. The unified e f fo rts of national groups in the observance of Captive Nations Week should serve as a model for co-operative action among wom en of different ethnic back grounds. U N W L A R egion al Councils 1. Strive for greater co-opera tion w ith the Federation of Women’s Clubs. It would be ad visable if the Regional Councils or Branches delegated by them belonged to the Federation. 2. Support the Branches in their contacts with American or ganizations by offerin g advice and providing needed materials. 3. Look for articles on Ukrain ian subjects in the local papers and periodicals and a ssist the UNW LA Press Committee is correcting any ex istin g errors and misconceptions. 4. Strive to establish contacts with the local papers and period icals ; supply editors w ith news articles and inform ation about our work. This is especially im portant before major holidays. 5. Support UCCA letter-w rit ing campaigns to U. S. Senators and Representatives on such v i tal m atters as the Captive N a tions Commission, the Taras Shevchenko stamp, etc. U N W L A B ran ch es 1. Before establishing contacts with American organizations for such a ffairs as shows, festiv a ls and exhibits, seek the advice of the Regional Board on program planning and m aterials. 2. Support UCCA and U N  WLA actions (Captive N ations Commission, T. Shevchenko stam p) by w riting letters to U. S. Senators and Congressmen. 3. Seek contacts with the lo cal American press through in terview s and by supplying edi tors w ith news articles and fe a  ture stories on Ukrainian cus toms.
