A g ath a O sadchuk, P re sid e n t of B ran ch 37 BRANCH 37 PR E SID E N T Since June 1, 1967 th e 37 UNW LA B ranch in D etroit, Mich, has a new president. M rs. A g a th a O sadchuk is well know n to its m em bers and to all Soyu- zank a’s in D etroit. Like m any o th er ladies in D etroit, she w as born, and educated in C anada. H er p aren ts came fro m Zalis- chyky in U kraine to Canora, Sask. H ere, little A g ath a was born and later m arried. Now she has a 22-year-old d au g h ter in college and 26-year-old m a r ried son. She also has a grand d au g h ter and a grandson. M rs. A. O sadchuk is busy w ith all kinds of com m unity work. Besides our C hapter she also is th e chairm an of th e C ancer Sew ing Group. U krainian wom an. T his will fu rn ish us w ith th e key direc tives w hich will aid our fu rth e r ing w ork and needs. The W om an’s Session shall also o ffer an opportunity fo r th e m eeting of rep resen tativ es of w om en’s organizations from th e various continents. W e are aw aiting th e delegates from E u rope, South A m erica, and A us tralia, and once again, we shall m eet w ith our sister-frien d s fro m Canada. The U krainian N ational W om en’s League of A m erica (SUA) will play h o st ess to th e Session, th erefo re, it will assum e th e g re a te st am ount of responsibility upon itself due to th e role th a t she will have to play. A ddressing th e 1500 delegates, M rs. Pearce, P residen t of Gen eral F ederation of W om en’s Clubs, related th e pioneer wom a n ’s ch aracter to to d ay ’s club women as th ey face up to th e is sues of our tim e — prevention of crim e and addiction, air and w ater pollution, education, con servation, public affairs, in te r national relations, consum er protection, com m unity im prove m ent and m any others. M rs. P earce w as especially concerned about “such scars on our national ch aracter as flag ra n t crim e and law lessness, re volt on th e cam pus, dilution of m orals and Suprem e C ourt deci sions th a t coddle subversives and crim inals.” In speaking of “incredible” Suprem e C ourt de cisions . . . one upholding th e rig h t of subversives to teach in New Y ork public schools and colleges, and others w hich in crease th e difficulty of convict- tin g people who have com m it ted a crim e . . . M rs. P earce urged th e GFW C m em bership to “back legislators w ho w an t to act on legislation in th e public in te re st b u t are un certain about th e views of th e ir co n stitu en ts” (e.g., vo lun tary p articip atio n in P ray e r for Public Schools). In th is connecction M rs. P earce suggested all m em bers of th e convention to w rite th e ir Con gressm en to im plem ent th e GF- WTC resolutions . . . on air pollu tion, crim e control, consum er education, non-proliferation of atom ic w eapons, safety fo r m o torcyclists, venereal disease, and volunteer p articipation in fed er al program s, as well as am end m ents reg ard in g credit and in stallm ent buying, equal rig h ts and responsibilities of women, m isrep resen tation in advertisin g and m ark eting , sale of firearm s and w ater pollution control. M rs. P earce w arned p aren ts about th e influence of Commu n ists who have in filtrated our schools of hig h er learning. In keeping w ith th e them e of th e adm inistration, “Build w ith Y outh fo r a B etter W orld,” M rs. P earce outlined th e active strides tak en by th e Junior Clubs in pro jects such as S tate Y outh C onservation, Sum m er Y outh O pportunity Cam paign (“Help Them Help T hem selves” ), ra isin g $80,000 fo r th e life-saving ship H O PE, th e GFW C-Shell Oil Scholarship program , O peration H ealth y B a bies, CARE, th e H allm ark a rt aw ards fo r high school seniors, com m unity im provem ent and all m ajo r GFW C program s. The keynote of th e convention w as delivered by a form er M iss A m erica, M arilyn V an D erbur, who captured th e audience w ith h er delivery of a talk on “Goals and D ream s.” Also, S andra Rob erts, 1967 M iss Teenage A m er ica, spoke on th e tim ely subject of “Y outh S afety .” A m ong th e m any effective speakers w as Thom as J. Cahill, C hief of Police of San F ran cis co, who said too m uch freedom has been given our children, b u t acknowledged th e “trem endous role women play and should play in brin g in g th e proper values to th e ir children.” Also appearing a t th e convention w e re : Desi A r- naz, A rt L in k letter and Jack V a lenti, president of th e M otion P ictu re A ssn. of A m erica and fo rm er aide to P res. Johnson, who stressed th e responsibility of p aren ts in guiding th e selec tion of m ovies fo r th e ir children by seeing th e p ictu res th em selves firs t. “A udiences should nourish th a t w hich is good, ig nore th a t w hich is no t.” Also, th e stim u latin g panel discussions on A ir Pollution and “C om m unity D evelopm ent; th e City, th e Town, th e Volun te e r” and th e B roadcasters In d u stry provided th e delegates m uch food fo r th o u g h t.
