MUSEUM EXHIBIT IN NEW YORK Why Join? The program of our XIV Con vention in November, 1965, in cluded a M useum E xhibit in the U krainian-Am erican Institute in New York which afforded dele gates the opportunity to view an im pressive array of beautiful rugs, native costum es and em broideries. This Museum E xhibit of the U krainian N ational W omen’s League will soon be opened to the public. These native treas ures which give evidence of our ancient culture will be viewed by our entire m em bership, invited Am erican guests, and m any rep resentatives of the U krainian art world. A special Commission is cur rently working on last-m inute preparations for the opening of the exhibit. The Commission, aided (by UNW LA President Mrs. Pushkar and the Folk A rt Chairm an, Mrs. Rzepecka, in cludes M esdames Dzus, Sichyn- ska, Kochan, H ladyshovska as mem bers. Mrs. M yroslava Hor- dynska is in charge of decora tions. In the m eantim e the UNW LA continues to acquire new articles for the exhibit. M any beautiful things have been received to date. Mrs. I. Zaparaniuk of U ti ca, N. Y. has donated an old em broidered woman’s blouse, and an em broidered m an’s shirt was received from the collection of N. Kornilov. UNW LA Branch 64 has donated several samples of hand-woven m aterial, received from individual m em bers. Mrs. Sophia Doroshenko sent a fam ily heirloom — a shirt once owned by the first President of the U krainian N ational Repub lic and noted historian, Prof. M. H rushevsky. M rs. M aria Seme- nyna contributed four ancient decorative towels. The generally accepted theory is th a t m an is a gregarious be ing and is not m eant to live alone. Also, th at no m an is an island, and th at m ost people like to be w ith others. This perhaps is the reason th at A m erica is the land of volunteer organizations, and the country of “joiners.” And, in this respect the U krain ian com m unity is a conform ist for w here would one find more organizations than am ong the Ukrainians. The reasons why people join clubs and organizations are many, but for a U krainian wom an w hat better reason is there to join the ranks of the U krainian National W omen’s League (Souz Ukrainok) than to be w ith the people of the same cultural back ground and interests. F u rther more, here are some of the rea sons why women of all walks of life have joined the League, the only independent U krainian W omen’s organization of forty years standing which was built by the courageous pioneer im mi grants : —To associate w ith women of sim ilar interests, ideals and as pirations. —To study social problems and to work for their solution. —To work for and to support an ideal — free world and free U kraine. —To prom ote and to carry out civic, educational and charitable projects (Souz Building Home for the elderly and a m useum ). —To be useful and to contrib ute to the betterm ent of people particularly the youth of our com m unity and of our country. —To develop a feeling of con fidence, im portance, or pride — and to satisfy the need of be longing. —To make new friends and to enjoy old ones. —To build one’s self up by belonging to a respected organi zation. —To learn som ething new — to improve self. —To satisfy the need for so cial approval, for fellowship, and —To ju st get away from home and fam ily for a little while. The League’s door is always open to all women of U krainian birth or descent for it is based on Christian m oral principles, religious tolerance and political non-partisanship. It is truly a woman’s federated organization. The scope of its program encom passes every phase of commun ity life and offers cultural en richm ent in all things U krainian —history, literature, music, folk arts and crafts, traditions and customs. The League offers lim itless opportunities to the m em bers for self-expression, indivi dual grow th, leadership develop m ent, and organizational know how. To know the League’s history, philosophy, ideals, structure, methods, goals and accomplish m ents is to experience fulfill m ent which comes only when a m em ber becomes involved in the work of the organization. Yes, it is a labor of love and of giv ing of onesself while working for the League and fulfilling a need, but the experience is re w arding. To a m em ber of a na tional organization the stature of the League is to satisfy the basic psychological need of be longing. So you ask, W hy Join ? then W hy Live ? Perhaps the fol lowing quote from an unknown source best explains why belong: “w hat a woman does for herself dies w ith h e r; w hat she does for com munity lives forever.” Anastasia Yolker Two good talkers . not w orth one good listener.
