Ukrainian Folk Costume Our youngsters are frequently called upon to take part in school program s or to perform in folk dance recitals. For many m oth ers this is a real problem, as they have too little time or lack the know-how to make and em broider the necessary folk cos tumes. Truly, it is not an easy m atter. Patience and, indeed, special knowledge are needed to repro duce authentic folk costumes. In 1963 our article on folk costumes for girls was warmly acknowledged by grateful m oth ers. Since then we have been besieged with requests for a de scription of boys’ folk costumes. We are happy to present in this issue the first of a series of articles on a boy's folk costume. Boy’s Costume A boy's costume consists of shirt, pants, belt and boots. The older boy also wears a jacket (“zhupan”), but this is unneces sary for the younger child. The shirt is relatively easy to make. Our particular pattern has been somewhat modernized. You may make either a standing collar or an open one. The open ing at the throat is not buttoned up. It is a simple slit (“pazu- cha”), big enough to slide over the head easily. The sleeves have narrow cuffs. Simply buy a white shirt with long sleeves, take off the collar and sew on a stand ing one, made of a straight piece of white cotton double-folded to go around the neck opening. The pocket should also be taken off. The collar, shirt-front and cuffs are embroidered with a long nar row cross stitch design.
