A nd y e t, th o u g h th e situ a tio n is f a r fro m p e rfe c t, it is con sid era b ly b e tte r th a n m a n y of us realize. I t is fre q u e n tly m e re ly th ro u g h lack of aw a re n e ss an d in fo rm a tio n on ou r p a r t th a t we fa il to n o tice im p o rta n t an d in te re s tin g p u b licatio n s. R ea d e rs o f “ O ur L ife ” h av e ask ed tim e an d ag a in a b o u t E n g lish -la n g u a g e sou rce m a te ria l on U k ra in e , w hich w ould be o f in te r e s t to th em selv es, to th e ir ch ildren, an d to th e ir E n g lish sp e a k in g frie n d s. T h e re fo re, we sh all s ta r t a colum n to fill th is need b y m ean s of b rie f re a d a b le a n n o ta tio n s of books in E n g lish a b o u t U k ra in e an d th e U k ra in ia n s. W e in te n d to co v er a v a rie ty of b o o k s: old an d new , fic tio n an d n on -fictio n , sch o larly an d p o p u lar. T he m a jo r ity of th e m a re av ailab le in public an d college lib ra rie s, o r in U k ra in ia n lib ra rie s, w h ich ex is t in som e cities. W e in te n d to pro v id e fu ll b ib lio g rap h ic in fo rm a tio n a b o u t each book, so th a t w h o ev er is in te re s te d m ay a sk fo r th e book a t h is lib ra ry or even o rd e r it fro m th e p u b lish e r. O ne o f th e re so lu tio n s of th e 1965 U N W L A C onvention w as concerned w ith m a te ria ls in E n g lish . I t is m y fe rv e n t hope t h a t th is re so lu tio n w ill n o t be overlooked in th e p ro g ra m p la n n in g. T he ea rly U k ra in ia n im m i g ra n ts p a sse d on to th e ir A m e r ican-b orn ch ild ren all th e know l edge o f U k ra in ia n h is to ry an d tra d itio n s, t h a t th e y th em selv es h ad . T h ey o rg an ized dan cin g g ro u p s an d ev en in g schools fo r le a rn in g th e U k ra in ia n la n gu ag e. T h is f ir s t g e n e ra tio n of U k ra in ia n A m erican s re ta in e d m o st o f th is e a rly le a rn in g an d tra in in g w hich w as lim ited to a deg ree b y th e e x te n t of th e ed u c a tio n of th e ir te a c h e rs. T he U k ra in ia n s p irit w as k e p t alive an d sh a re d w ith th e g en eral A m erican public th ro u g h v ario u s y o u th o rg an izatio n s. T oday, th e A m erican m o th e r of U k ra in ia n d escen t w ould like to p a ss on to h e r c h ild re n love an d re sp e c t fo r th e ir U k ra in ia n h e rita g e . In to d a y ’s m o dern w orld, m o re th a n th e s m a tte r in g of k n ow ledg e o f U k ra in e t h a t th e f ir s t g e n e ra tio n o f U k ra in ia n A m erican s receiv ed is n e c essa ry . In o rd e r to g ive ou r c h ild ren a b e tte r u n d e rsta n d in g of th e ir c u ltu ra l h e rita g e and in still in th e m th e s p irit o f th e ir fo re fa th e rs , th e g ap s in o u r own U k ra in ia n ed u catio n m u st be filled an d m a te ria ls in th e E n g lish la n g u ag e m u s t be m ade availab le to th e ch ild ren . W ith th e in c re a sin g aw a ren e ss am ong A m erican s an d o th e r peoples of w h a t “U k ra in ia n ” m ean s, such m a te ria l is e x tre m e ly n ec essa ry . T he p u rp o se w ould be serv ed b e s t b y sh o rt, concise, fa c tu a l m a te ria l on g eo g ra p h y , h isto ry , lite ra tu re , fin e a r ts , fo lk a rts , etc., w ith illu stra tio n s. Such m a te ria l, m o st e ffec tiv e in th e fo rm of slides, could be used in m an y w ays, in m a n y places, w ith m a n y age g ro u p s.
