М гз. S fceo h an n F e d y k , P re s id e n t of 37 U N W L A B ra n c h 37 BRANCH PRESIDENT Stephania Fedyk is the Presi dent of Chapter 37 of the UN WLA in Detroit, Mich. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, and is one of five daughters of Jakiw and M otria (nee Diachun) Kar- man. Jakiw and M otria came from the village of Stehnikivtsi in the county of Tarnopil, in W estern Ukraine. Her fath er im m igrated to Canada in 1910 and settled in and somewhat later, around the 3rd century B.C. came the Sar- mations. These tribes lived in our land for several centuries. The lavish costumes and orna m ents which were unearthed in their burial sites bear noticeable eastern influences. In planning the show, the la dies of Branch 64 decided to in clude Sarm atian and Scythian costumes to show their influence on the national costumes of Uk raine. “Historical costumes of the Ukrainian woman” will be shown in several Ukrainian communi ties throughout the U. S. We heartily recommend to all our readers th a t they see the show, for in each costume they will recognize some detail which has been incorporated into the de sign of contem porary Ukrainian costumes. She played in a mandolin orchestra, and was also a student in Wasyl Avramenko’s dancing school. She later sang in the Uk rainian People’s Home Choir, and then joined the Ukrainian National Federation Choir. She was active in an adult dancing group and a dram atic club, where she m et P eter Fedyk. Peter, an im m igrant to Cana da, was born in the village of Opaka, in the county of Luba- czow. They were m arried in 1935, and 3 years later came to De troit. They soon applied for cit izenship in the United States, and were accepted within five years. Here again they made friends quickly among their own people, and continued their cultural work as active members of the Ukrainian community. Stefania became a member of UNWLA. Stephania has inherited from her parents a love of her herit age. Some of her hobbies include cooking, baking, sewing, embroi dering, and E aster Egg coloring. She has a treasured collection of a rt pieces which include wood carvings and pysanky. Stephania and Peter have two daughters. Joanne, the elder of the two, is a registered dental hygienlst and is now m arried. Gloria, has completed 2 years at the University of D etroit. She hopes to specialize and get a M aster’s Degree in Geography. In 1963 she was in A ustria for 10 weeks, where she lived with an A ustrian fam ily in St. Poel- ten, Niederoesterreich, as a for eign exchange student from the American Field Service. Mrs. Fedyk has brought up her daughters to love their Uk rainian heritage. As a result, both speak, read, and w rite in Ukrainian. They also know a great deal about U krainian trad i tions and the national cuisine. Joanne is especially good in em broidery and has taken p art in dem onstrating the a rt of E aster Egg coloring. OUR RESOLUTIONS Press 1. To continue publishing in “Our Life” articles on organiza tional, social, and cultural prob lems. 2. To devote less space to ac counts of jubilees and sim ilar ob servances, while placing more emphasis on the activities of the younger UNWLA m em bers; to strive for a future “Youth Corner” in “Our Life” which would be devoted exclusively to their work and problems. 3. To increase “Our Life” to 40 pages in order to keep up with organizational activities. 4. To build up the subscrip tion campaign for “Our Life” and to increase the Press Fund. 5. To elect a Press Chairman in each UNWLA Branch. Home Economics 1. To publish in book form the recipes which have appeared in issues of “Our Life.” 2. To inform U krainian wom en of various educational oppor tunities which will help them to raise their personal qualifica tions. SUA CHAPTER 37, DETROIT, LESYA UKRAINKA Activities for 1965 began on January 6th w ith a traditional Sviat Vecher. Members and their families gathered at the famous Starlite R estaurant, the owners of which are our past president Ann Strokon, and her husband W alter. To join in this SUA fam ily festivity guests from the American and the U krainian community were invited. They included Prof. Thelma James, folklore specialist from W ayne State U .; M argot Pear- sol Curator from D etroit Histo rical M useum ; W alter Frantczak, Executive Director of Interna tional Institute and his w ife; Jo seph Gurski, Pres, of the Inter national Institute and his wife and d au g h ter; John Korney, Vice pres, and Public Relations chair man of the Bank of the Com monwealth, and his wife, and our esteemed Councilman, Mary Beck.
