- U k r a i n i a n W o m a n - B E F O R E T H E G FW C C O N V E N T IO N In th e m id st of ou r C onven tio n , w e w ere in fo rm ed t h a t th e G en eral F e d e ra tio n o f W om en ’s C lubs w ill o bserve its D iam ond Ju b ilee in C hicago, in Ju n e of 1966. T h is im p o rta n t A m erican w om en’s o rg a n iza tio n w as fo u n d ed in C hicago in 1890, an d b y 1892 its m em b e rsh ip included 185 w om en’s clubs. T oday, it e n com p asses 15,000 clubs u n ite d in 51 s ta te fe d e ra tio n s. T h is ph en o m en al g ro w th is in d icativ e o f th e g re a t p o p u la rity of th e G FW C . I ts 11 m illion m em b ers an d its m a n y m a jo r a t ta in m e n ts h av e m ad e it an im p o rta n t fo rc e in A m erican life. T h e re is n o t a co m m u n ity w ith an activ e w om en’s club t h a t can n o t p o in t to som e ta n g ib le p ro d u c t o f th is club’s a c tiv ity . I t m a y be th e public lib ra ry , a h o sp ital, a clinic, a school, or a c o m m u n ity ce n te r. T h e ac h ie v em en ts o f th e G W FC go b ack to th e tim e of its fo u n d in g . T he G eneral F e d e ra tio n b e g a n its cam p aig n a g a in st child lab o r in 1896 an d in 1904 ap p ro v ed “th e c re a tio n of a N a tio n a l B u re a u to o b ta in an d re c o rd in fo rm a tio n a b o u t chil d re n an d dum b a n im a ls.” In 1906 it ask ed C ong ress to a u th o riz e th e C e c re ta ry o f C om m erce an d L a b o r to “in v e stig a te an d re p o rt upon th e in d u stria l, social, m o r al, ed u catio n al an d p h y sic a l con d itio n o f w om en an d child la b o r e rs in th e U n ited S ta te s .” Six y e a rs la te r th e C h ild ren ’s B u rea u w as estab lish e d . W e h a d th e p le a su re of h o stin g M rs. W illiam H aseb ro o k , th e P re s id e n t of th e G eneral F e d e ra tio n a t o u r N ovem ber C onven tio n . In a re c e n t le tte r M rs. H aseb ro o k g re e te d th e U N W L A on its 4 0 th a n n iv e rsa ry , an d ex p re sse d h e r a d m ira tio n fo r its fin e w ork. T he le tte r w as a d is tin c t h o no r, an d w e a re looking fo rw a rd to ta k in g p a r t in th e ju b ilee o f th e G FW C in th e su m m e r o f th is y e a r. In th is issu e of o u r m ag azin e w e a re p u b lish in g th e lis t o f r e s olu tions w hich w ere ra tifie d a t th e X IV U N W L A C onvention. I t h a s h ap p en ed in th e p a s t t h a t re so lu tio n s a re n o t d isc u ss ed a t th e m e e tin g s o f o u r E n g lish -sp e a k in g B ran ch es. T he g e n e ral consensus is th a t th e se re so lu tio n s a re n o t p e rtin e n t to o u r p roblem s, an d since th e y a re w ritte n in U k ra in ia n , th e y a re so m ew h at d iffic u lt to in te rp re t s a tisfa c to rily , an d th u s b e s t ig nored. W e te n d to co n d u ct ou r p ro g ra m s a cco rd in g to older p lan s or look fo r new goals w ith o u t h a v in g e v e r re a lly looked in to th o se p ro p o sed b y th e U N W L A re so lu tio n s. In tim e , w e n o tice th a t th e re is little e n th u siasm am o ng o u r m em b ers, and th a t w e h av e tro u b le in r e c r u it in g new ones. H ow m u ch e a sie r it w ould be fo r us, if w e w ould only ta k e th e tim e an d e ffo rt to becom e ac q u a in te d w ith th e U N W L A p ro g ra m ! In its v a rie ty of pro p o sed a c tiv itie s w e w ould u n d o u b ted ly fin d som e w hich could easily be in c o rp o ra te d in to o u r ow n p ro g ra m s. In u n d e rta k in g th e se ac tiv itie s w e w ould jo in in th e civic w o rk b ein g done b y th o u sa n d s of o th e r U k ra in ia n w om en in th e U. S. L e t us, th e re fo re , becom e ac q u a in te d w ith th e U N W L A r e s o lutio ns ! In th e g en e ra l session th e U N W L A C onvention issu ed g re e tin g s to th e P re la te s of ou r C h u rch es in th e U .S., an d es pecially to th e A rch b ish o p -M a jo r, H is E m in en ce Jo se p h C a rd i nal S lip y j in R om e. I t also g re e t ed th e U k ra in ia n people b eh in d th e Iro n C u rta in , an d p a rtic u la rly th e w om en, w ho h av e ta k e n upon th e m se lv e s th e d iffic u lt ta s k o f s a fe g u a rd in g th e re li gio us an d n a tio n a l beliefs of th e ir fam ilies. T he U k ra in ia n C o ngress C o m m ittee o f A m erica, w h ich fo r m a n y y e a rs h a s stood in th e fo re fro n t of U k ra in ia n life in th e U. S. w as g re e te d on its 2 5 th a n n iv e rsa ry . Special g re e t in g s w ere e x ten d ed to th e P r e s i d e n t o f th e W FU W O , M rs. T h e C onven tio n also p aid trib u te to U N W L A B ra n c h e s 1, 2, 3, an d 4, w hich a re th e fo u n d in g B ra n c h es w h ich h av e been ac tiv e in th e U N W L A fo r over 30 y e ars. T h e re so lu tio n s did n o t end h ere, how ev er. T h e C onvention appealed to U k ra in ia n relig io u s an d civic in stitu tio n s w hich a re e n g ag ed in ed u catio n al w o rk — to co o p erate w ith U k ra in ia n m o th e rs in th e ir im p o rta n t ta s k of sa fe g u a rd in g th e U k ra in ia n se n sib ility o f th e y o u n g e r gene ra tio n b y fo s te rin g relig io u s and n a tio n a l tra d itio n s an d th e U k ra in ia n la n g u a g e in c h u rc h e s an d schools. T h ey also called upon th e se sam e relig io u s an d educa tio n a l in s titu tio n s to u n ite an d c o -o rd in ate th e ir e ffo rts fo r th e g e n e ral b e n e fit of th e U k ra in ia n c o m m u n ity an d ou r y o u th . T h e concluding re so lu tio n s a re d ire c te d to U k ra in ia n w om en. T h e C onvention called upon all U k ra in ia n m o th e rs to p ro te c t th e U k ra in ia n fa m i ly, w hich is th e fo u n d a tio n o f relig io u s an d n a tio n a l tra d itio n an d c u ltu re . T he C onvention also ap pealed to th e o ffic e rs an d m em b ers of th e U N W L A to fo s te r th e s p irit of u n ity w ith in th e U k ra in ia n com m u n ity an d to striv e fo r a u n i fic a tio n of o u r civic an d p o litical agencies.
