UNWLA BRANCH 78 REPORT Under the capable presidency of Mrs. Gloria Skaskiw the local Branch of the U krainian N ation al Women’s League is a beehive of activity. Under her wise guidance the Branch has in creased its membership to a total of forty-tw o members. The first half of 1965 was an unusually busy tim e for us. An election of officers was held on February 7th, 1065. The follow ing slate of candidatees was elected: President --- Mrs. Bohdan ‘Gloria’ Skaskiw ; Vice Presi dent — Mrs. Ann Bleech Him chak; Secretary — Mrs. Ivan Ma- linow sky; Treasurer — Mrs. Theodore Zalutsky. The m eeting was presided over by Mrs. Osypa Hrabowenska, UNWLA Board member, from Philadelphia. In the course of the m eeting it was determined to convene frequently, to commem orate m ajor patriotic events and other notable dates, and to keep the membership well-informed of the various activities sponsored by the Branch. On M arch 1, the League gave a concert in commemoration of the 500 M artyred Heroines who were crushed to death by Rus sian arm y tanks in a slave labor camp in Siberia. The concert was unusually well attended. Through the efforts of Mrs. Skaskiw and other League members the E aster Sunday edi tion of the Pictorial Magazine section of “The W ashington Eve ning S tar” carried a full-page article on U krainian E aster U krainians w ith questions and comments on the dresses and em broideries. The success of thje Fashion Show can be attributed to the efforts of the members of Branch 53 who presented the show, and to the wonderful co operation of the members and th eir daughters of Branches, 66, 72 and 82 who responded so g ra ciously to the invitation to take p a rt in the program . Anne Kushner Sec’y, Br. 53. food. Included was a large photo graph of a U krainian basket with traditional paska and em broidered scarf. A recipe on how to make the paska accompanied the article. Comments and admi ration expressed b y /th e photo grapher and staff who were treated to some of Mrs. Skas- kiw’s culinary skill, were most flattering. On April 23 an E aster Agape “Sviachene” was observed by the League in the church hall of the Holy Fam ily parish. It was presided over by F ather Theo dore Danusiar, pastor, who also gave the invocation and pro nounced the blessing. A t the con clusion of the joyful feat the group listened to two well-pre pared talks on U krainian E aster observances delivered by Mrs. Ann Bleech Himchak in English and Mrs. M aryssa Procinska in Ukrainian. During the business meeting th a t followed the pros pect of a public exhibit of Uk rainian arts and crafts was dis cussed. The end of classes at the par ish kindergarten was observed on May 2nd with a special pro gram prepared by a member of the League, Mrs. L. Maksymiuk, and sponsored by the UNWLA. The program consisted of reci tations, songs, exercises, and two skits, “The Pum pkin Walks About the Garden” and “The Cocks” perform ed by the chil dren. Mrs. L arissa Djachok ac companied the youngsters on the piano. Stage settings were done by Mrs. Steffa Djachok. The chidren perform ed splendidly, which spoke well for the work and efforts of the kindergarten staff. The members observed Moth er’s Day by receiving Commun ion in a group at a Divine L itur gy in Holy Fam ily Church. This w orthy Christian example moved one of the parish women to tears. She was so impressed th a t she made a donation to the League. L ater in the day, the member ship heard a talk on “M other’s Day, Its Meaning and Theme” by Mrs. Skaskiw, and listened to a brief discourse on Vasyl Stefa- nyk by Mrs. Paslavska. A busi ness m eeting followed. Since our local organization has the good fortune to have the beautiful statue of Shevchenko in our fair city, we have many opportunities to pay our homage and respect to this great m an during the many commemora tions th a t occur at this stately monument. And so, in May, we assisted at the sealing of the doc um ents in the pedestal of the monument. Ou r women appeared in our incomparably beautiful Ukrainian costumes. We were very proud and happy to meet and talk with our Supreme P res ident, Mrs. Helen Lototsky, and her entourage from Philadelphia, who were present at the cere mony. To acquaint the American public w ith Ukraine and Uk rainian problems, our Branch arranged an exhibit of the best examples of U krainian folk craft in the Silver Spring, M aryland Public Library. The exhibit, which was held from May 7 through June 4, was handled by Mesdames Procinska and Paslav ska. It included an artistic ar rangem ent of Ukrainian cera mics, embroidery, H utsul wood- carving, and E aster eggs. Eng lish explanations were provided for the benefit of the viewers. The exhibit was among th e best cultural events ever to take place in the library. Thousands of visitors voiced their appreciation of the U krainian display. In June our Branch assisted the pastor of the local Ukrainian Catholic church in conducting a successful picnic. Our ladies helped w ith the cooking and serving of food. A fter the usual summer lull in activities our busy president is once again on the phone, re minding us th a t soon we will have to “roll up our sleeves” and “put our noses to the grind stone.” The busy seasons of fall and w inter are at hand and lots of work is waiting.
