THE UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE IN AMERICA In November, 1965 the XIV UNWLA Convention m arked the organization’s 40th anniversary. The Jubilee of the oldest Uk rainian women’s organization on th e American continent a ttrac t ed numerous guests and received extensive press coverage. The UNWLA was founded in New York in 1925, when several existing women’s groups joined to form one central organiza tion. The goals of the UNWLA were to unite women of U krain ian descent for civic, education al, and charitable work, and the fostering of cultural traditions. In addition, the organization pledged its full support to the freedom movement of the Uk rainian people. These goals became realized in the m any activities of the UN W LA: aid to the victim s of a flood in 1927 and the man-made fam ine which decimated the Uk rainian population in 1988. In 1938 the UNWLA came out in support of Carpatho-Ukraine. O ther activities included: aid to Ukrainian refugees (1945-49) and to widows and children (1950-51) ; financial support of Ukrainian schools in Germany (1953-63), and to aged U krain ian women (1958-65), and sup port of U krainian schools in Bel gium. A t the same tim e th e UN WLA continued its organization al grow th and development in the U. S. In 1932 the F irst Wom en’s Congress was held in New York, at which tim e the UN- W LA’s organizational activities were form ulated. Since th a t tim e the Branches of the UNWLA have grown to the present 90. They are divided into 7 regions, each region being represented by a Regional Council. In 1948 the F irst World Con gress of U krainian Women was sponsored by the UNWLA in Philadelphia, and gave rise to the founding of the W orld Fede ration of U krainian Women’s Organizations. In the 40 years since its found ing the organization has made great strides. In the cultural field alone, the UNWLA has or ganized 8 women’s choruses and 5 dram atic troupes, has spon sored a competition for satirical w riting, has erected a m onum ent to Ukrainian poetess Lesya Uk rainka in Cleveland’s Cultural Gardens, has published an American translation of L. Uk- rainka’s works, and in addition sponsors a rt exhibits and con certs. In the field of education, UNWLA sponsors various recre ational opportunities for chil dren, including dram a groups, Ukrainian folk dance courses, and Day Centers for pre-school children. A t the present tim e 12 such Day Centers have been es tablished in m ajor Ukrainian communities. The UNWLA headquarters are located in Philadelphia, where the organization has pur chased its own home. For many years UNWLA was headed by Mrs. Helen Lotocky, prom inent civic leader and one of the found ers of the organization. Mrs. Lotocky currently serves as Vice President of WFUWO in the U.S. Mrs. Stephania Pushkar, form er Vice President of UN WLA was elected to head the organization at the recent Con vention. NEW WFUWO PUBLICATIONS The WFUWO has published in Toronto, Canada a monogra- phy of the noted civic leader, K onstantina Malycky, entitled: “The M entor of Generations.” Mrs. Malycky was a distinguish ed teacher and a w riter of chil dren’s literature. She was also very active in the U krainian or ganized women’s movement. The book contains a biography of K.
