Branch 53 Astoria Report B ranch 53 in A storia, N. Y., com prised of a sm all group of women who m eet inform ally, once a m onth, in each o th er’s homes. E ach g ath erin g brings, besides new s of th e Regional Council and activities of o ther B ranches, an in tere stin g discus sion on some tim ely topic: local election issues, wom en in th e Sichovy S triltsi, th e Shevchenko m onum ent in W ashington, wom en who in itiated th e organization of U krainian women, th e v isit of th e USSR delegation to U krain ian centers and others. Because th e m em bership is sm all, th e opportunities fo r ra is ing funds are lim ited, b u t a pre- L enten bingo and a pre-C hrist- m as sale of sm all em broidered articles w ere very successful. As in years past, th e m em bers a t tended th e “E m broidered Ball,” enjoyed a Spilne Sviachene w ith th e ir husbands, and finished th e year w ith a C hristm as Social. The group’s special p ro ject is do n atin g books on U krainian top ics to local libraries, and in 1964 copies of S. S techishin’s Cook book and H alun-Bloch’s “U k rain ian Folk T ales” w ere donat ed to tw o Queens L ibraries. To fu rth e r an in tere st in U krainian culture, an exhibit of E a ste r eggs was arran g ed in a local A s to ria library. The exhibit includ ed stey-by-stey directions fo r decorating U krainian E a ste r eggs. The directions w ere p re p ared by M rs. S tephanie Rygiel. The tre a su re r of B r. 53 M rs. D orette Galan p articip ated in th e program of th e A nniversary C elebration of OUR L IF E w hich was sponsored by th e Regional Council of New Y ork City. M rs. Galan also served as H ostess a t th e B etter Living C enter a t th e W orld’s F a ir d u r ing “U krainian W eek” and d u r ing th e T ea Social. B ranch 53 w as invited to tak e p a rt in “U krainian D ay” a t th e New Y ork S tate Pavilion a t th e W orld’s F a ir in A u g u st by giv ing a F ashion Show of tra d itio n al costum es and em broidered dresses. The pro g ram w as a suc cess th ro u g h th e generous co operation of M rs. Irene Padoch (Br. 64), M rs. T ania Zym na and M rs. Olga Slyw ka (Br. 1), M rs. D ora Pifko (Br. 72), M rs. Rose F enchynsky and th e young la dies of th e Sacred H e art League of Holy Cross P arish in A storia. M em bers of B ranch 53, M rs. P if ko, and th e young ladies m od elled th e dresses and costum es. The F ashion Show was so well received by th e audience th a t th e B ranch has been invited to re peat th e program th is year. We tak e th is opportunity to invite ladies in th e M etropolitan N. Y.- N .J. area who have original cos tum es or em broidered dresses to tak e p a rt in th e Show w hich will be held on June 6th. PR E S ID E N T OF UNW LA BRANCH 53 The president and co-founder of B ranch 53 of th e U krainian N ational W om en’s A ssociation of A m erica is M rs. A lexandra R iznyk of Long Island City, N.Y. Born in New Y ork in 1917, she came from a p atrio tic U k rain ian fam ily. H er fa th e r, M ichael L yktey w as a long-tim e Secre ta ry of B ranch 69 of th e U k rain ian N ational A ssociation, and h er m other E udokia L yktey w as a form er V ice-P resident of U NW LA B ranch 4. W hile atten d in g H u n ter Col lege, A lexandra L yktey helped to organize one of th e firs t U k rain ian exhibits ever to be p re sented a t th e College. She also studied m usic and a rt, both of w hich in tere sts have rem ained w ith h er to th is day. She graduated from H u n ter College in 1937 w ith a degree in elem entary education, and prior to h er m arriag e to J!> , John Riz nyk, w orked as a ju n io r bacterio logist a t St. L uke’s H ospital. F o r th e p a st 17 years, M rs. Riznyk has ta u g h t elem entary school in A storia, N. Y. irv >3 she helped to organize "H-. h 53 of th e UNW LA, and has served as P resid en t of th e New Y ork Regional Council of th e U N W LA B ranches. She is a m em ber of th e N. Y. League of B usiness and P rofessional W om en. Mr. and M rs. Riznyk have two ch ild ren : M yroslaw Ivan, now w ith Cone Mills, Inc., and A lex an d ra Eudokia, a g rad u atin g senior a t H u n ter College.
