A Novel Concept — Branch 72's Leadership W orkshop Series The num erous in terestin g fa cets of T aras Shevchenko, — his life, w ritings, e ra — em erged during an enjoyable and educa tional evening a t New Y ork’s In stitu te of A m erica on M arch 16,1965. T aras Shevchenko, poet lau reate of U kraine, has long been revered by th e U krainian people and his poetry vividly conveys th e pathos of hum an dram a, th e w arm th and trag ed y of th e U krainian soil. T his was Shevchenko E vening as B ranch 72 sponsored th e initial venture in its Leaderdship W orkshop Course. M rs. M ary D ushnyck, C ultural C hairm an, who in itia t ed th e series, hopes th a t th rough th is W orkshop w ith lectures by prom inent g uest speakers, those in th e UNW LA and those of our youth who aspire to become lead ers in U krainian-A m erican c ir cles, can come in contact w ith th e fin est in U krainian culture as well as contem porary U krain ian thinking. They can th u s en rich th e ir background and deep en th e ir understanding of our U krainian h eritag e and ideals. Preceding th e lecture by M r. W illiam Shust, th e a tre and tele vision perform er, B r. 72 m em b ers held a discussion of Shev chenko’s w ritings, w hich also in cluded an analysis of th e book “Shevchenko and W om en” by Dr. Luke M yshuha. A fte r th e m eeting, guests and m em bers w ere introduced to an in te re st ing display of books by and about Shevchenko, and to color ful em broidery and folk a rt b ea r ing Shevchenko’s likeness, a r ranged by M rs. D ushnyck. Amid th e graceful decor of F ifth A ve nue’s U krainian In stitu te , M rs. Mae Demey, P resid en t of B r. 72, welcomed th e guests and in tro duced M rs. D ushnyck, in charge of th e L eadership W orkshop, who presented M r. Shust. W illiam S hust, a native New Y orker, has appeared in a varie ty of roles in th e th e a tre and on television w hich a tte sts to his wide and outstanding acting ability. On B roadw ay, Mr. S hust perform ed th e leading m ale role of th e d ram a “Look Back in A n g er.” He created, in th e U nited States, th e lengthy and difficult lead role of Em ile M agis in Feli- cien M arceau’s comedy “The E gg,” w hich prem iered a t th e A rena S tage in W ashington, D. C. H is perform ance in th is prod uction prom pted “V ariety ,” th e th e a tre journal, to describe him as “an actor up to th e heavy de m ands of th e leading role” and H enry Hewes, critic of “The S atu rd ay Review ,” w rote th a t “Wm. S h u st gives a rem arkable perform ance as M agis.” In addi tion to appearing in leads and fe atu red roles in such fine TV shows as “C am era T hree,” he has perform ed in num erous Shevchenko recitations in th e U. S. and Canada. W ith th is fine th eatric al back ground and also, w ith a know l edge of th e U krainian language, M r. S hust interestin g ly wove his lecture w ith th rea d s of com m en ta ry about T aras Shevchen ko’s life and tim es and w ith readings of fine exam ples of his poetry. In his m oving recitation of Shevchenko’s “I w as th en 13,” Mr. S hust dram atized b ril liantly, th e divergent em otions of Shevchenko’s flow ing pass ages. H e relived fo r us, in Shev chenko’s own poignant words, th e poet’s deep unhappiness and m isery as an orphan of 13, his fleeting m om ents of ra d ia n t joy, and subsequently, as a m atu re man, his sorrow and despair when he questions w hy th is fleeting joy has not lasted nor been recaptured. T his Shevchen ko gem sparkled so m uch m ore b rig h tly because of th e talen ts of Mr. Shust. A m ong th e guests w ere Soyu- zanky, students and prom inent A m erican and C anadian U krain ians, including Leo Мої, sculp to r of th e Shevchenko statu e in W ashington, D. C. The m em bers and guests signed a le tte r to C ongressm an Thaddeus J. Dul- ski of N. Y. in w hich th ey than k ed him for, and urged con tinued support of, H. J. Res. 226 w hich he introduced in Congress. The resolution calls fo r th e issu ance of a C aptive N ations series of postage stam ps in honor of national heroes of freedom w ith th e Shevchenko stam p as th e firs t in th e series. The le tte r also urged passage of his H. J. Res. 225 calling fo r a Shevchenko Freedom L ib rary in th e L ib rary of Congress. W ith these w orth w hile endorsem ents, th e rew ard ing lecture by Mr. Shust, th e in te re stin g display and discussion, th e L eadership W orkshop Course is off to a fine s ta rt! Catharine A. Sharabura TWO UKRAINIAN ARTISTS FROM PHILADELPHIA M EET IN SPAIN Two young a rtists, alum nae of th e U krainian A rt Studio in P hil adelphia, Pa., M rs. R oxolana Lu- chakow ska-A rm strong and Miss C hristina Zelinska m et recently in Torrem olino, Spain, w here th ey w ere both on vacation. The tw o young women had been close friends w hen th ey both studied a t th e Philadelphia Studio. M rs. L uchakow ska-A rm strong is presently residing in A ndalu sia, w here h er husband, a sculp tor, is studying church architec tu re. M iss Zelinska is studying a rt in Basel, Sw itzerland. SUCCESSFUL UKRAINIAN WOMEN IN BRAZIL Two young U krainian women m et w ith recognition in Brazil, recently. M iss O ksana Borunen- ko w as aw arded a degree in sec ondary education, and announced h er decision to pursue grad u ate work. She is planning to w rite h er doctoral dissertatio n on th e them e of U krainian im m igration to Brazil. P a rt of h er research w ork has already been publish ed in th e Handbook of th e B ra zilian In stitu te of B ibliography. M yroslava Mak, a chem ical en gineer from Curitiba, was th e only woman am ong th e five en gineers selected by th e M inneso ta M anufacturing M ercantile Co in a recent com petition.
