- U k r a i n i a n W o m a n - Ukrainian Culture at the World's Fair The W orld’s F a ir in 1964 pro vided U krainians w ith m any op p ortunities to p resen t th e ir cul tu re before an international public. P articipation in several dance festivals, notably th e U k rain ian Folk F estival a t th e Sin ger Bowl last July, and a t th e Tiparillo B andstand w here U k rain ian dance groups ta u g h t in tern atio n al folk dancing, includ ing U krainian, to th e public, as well as appearances a t th e U nited S tates, New Y ork and New Jersey S tate Pavilions, th e Belgian Village, and others pro vided excellent occasions fo r U krainian groups to p resen t th e ir exciting and popular folk dances in colorful costum es. M oreover, U krainian choral m usic w as furn ish ed by th e “D um ka” Chorus a t th e U k rain ian Folk F estival, w hich also fe atu red a fashion show of tr a ditional U krainian costum es and m odern dress adaptations. “U k rainian D ay” a t th e New Y ork S ta te Pavilion included m any groups, am ong th em several U N W LA B ranches, p resen tin g folk a rt and costum e exhibits, danc ing, dem onstrations of “pysan- k a ” painting, etc. The UNW LA reception a t th e W om en’s H ospitality Lounge in th e B etter Living C enter fo r A m erican women leaders, in w hich tw en ty B ranches p artic i pated, also served as an occa sion to p resen t U krainian m usic and folk a rt. In addition, U N W LA hostesses w ere on d uty a t th e elegant P u rex P enthouse fo r one week and d istrib u ted th e U N W LA pam phlet and “pysan- k a ” leaflet to visitors. (V isitors to th e F a ir in 1965 m ay like to know th a t th e re are facilities fo r relaxing a fte r a few hours of w alking around th e grounds. The ideal settin g fo r th is is th e W om en’s H ospitality Lounge, P u rex P enthouse, atop th e B e tte r Liv ing C enter in th e In d u strial A rea. The com fortable lounge is a fine place to m eet friends, re st or w rite letters, and is open w eekdays from ten to six. The public is w elcom e). This year B ranch 72 has al ready held an exhibit and dem onstration of em broidery and “p y sanka” decorating a t th e P u rex P enthouse. It also appeared on a 15-m inute color television program a t th e RCA Pavilion, w hich w as rehearsed and taped before th e public and w as shown on m ore th a n 200 closed circuit color-TV sets th ro u g h o u t th e F a ir and will be shown again during th e F a ir season. The ex h ib it w as w idely covered by lo cal new spapers and on radio. On June 6 several UNW LA B ranches will again p articip ate in “U krainian D ay” a t th e New Y ork S tate Pavilion in an all-day program . On June 27 U krainian dance groups will appear in th e Folk F estival Council event a t th e huge S inger Bowl, and on Ju ly 11 th e m am m oth U krainian Folk F estival will again tak e place a t th e Bowl. On A ugust 28 U krainians will be dancing a t th e New Y ork S ta te Pavilion and on Sept. 12 th e y will appear a t th e U. S. Pavilion, w ith th e Folk F estival Council. A lthough th e re is no perm a n en t exhibit of U krainian folk a r t a t th is tim e a t th e F air, th ere are opportunities open fo r U krainians or U N W LA B ranch es to tak e p a rt in program s or to hold exhibits in num erous show cases. The sta te pavilions — New York, New Jersey, New E ngland and th e New Y ork C ity and U nited S tates pavilions — welcome cu ltu ral events. Also cities often hold program s — fo r exam ple, last y ear th e re was a “R ahw ay D ay” a t th e New J e r sey S ta te Pavilion in w hich U k rainians took p art. All these activities provide ex cellent opportunities fo r p re sen t ing U krainian culture and fo r in valuable contact w ith th e public. Thus, 1965 a t th e W orld’s F a ir offers m any occasions for U k rainians to p articip ate in pro gram s individually or w ith other groups and to share our distinc tive cultural h eritag e w ith peo ple from all over th e world.
