In order to become b e tte r ac quainted w ith th e w ork of these choirs, OUR L IF E has begun to conduct interview s w ith th e choirs’ conductors. FROM T H E A CTIV ITIES OF OUR UNW LA BRANCH IN CANTON, OHIO In th e last edition of OUR L IF E we presented a re p o rt of th e E a ste r egg dem onstrations of B ranch 87. In addition to the dem onstrations, th e E xecutive Board also prepared p rin ted re cipes fo r all th e holiday foods w hich w ere show n th a t day. Mrs. S. B arusew ych, P resid en t of B ranch 87 was kind enough to send us th e recipe fo r one of the specialties of th e ladies of Br. 87 — th e L ayer S heet T orte, w hich we fe atu re below. L ayer S heet T orte Dough: 4% cups flour 3 tablespoons sugar % lb. sweet butter 1 tbs. crisco Vz tsp. baking powder 3 tsp. condensed milk 1 pk. dry yeast dissolved in гА c. lukewarm milk Filling: 1 lb. ground walnuts 1 lb. apricot preserves 3 tbsp. sugar ground peel of one lemon Top glaze: tbsp. melted butter 3 tbsp. boiling water 7 oz. fudge chocolate P re h e a t oven to 350°. Cream su g ar and flour, add yolks, bak ing pow der and yeast. Mix and divide into th ree equal p arts. Roll each p a rt betw een tw o sheets of w ax paper (as fo r pie) to fit 16x11 sheet cake pan. Line pan w ith w ax paper. T ran sfer dough on paper. Spread V 2 of preserves, sprinkle on I /2 of re m aining filling. Follow w ith 2nd sheet of dough, re st of filling and th ird sheet of dough on top. Bake in 350-375° for 45 min. Mix glaze and spread on hot sheet cake. L et cool. By our w ork w ith A m erican wom en’s organizations we are enriching th e A m erican culture. SU R F ’N ’ SAND The new est sw im suits are b are and provocative. M any are m ade of stretch , solid-colored m aterial, and fe a tu re n et inlays and deep necklines. The m ore darin g ones fe a tu re assym etri- cal cut-outs on tum m ies, hips, and th e m id riff. The few one- shoulder styles are fem inine, al though som ew hat im practical fo r sunning. W ild a r t p rin ts as well as th e m ore trad itio n al solid colors are “in ” th is year. Bikinis and two-piece su its are very common th is year, and am ong th e m ost popular are those covered w ith lace, so ft em broidery, or ruffles. H ere is a b rief list of some of th e featu res to be found on th e new s u its : fro n t buttoning, belts th a t tie or buckle, zebra and ti g er stripes, little sk irts, black and brow n prints, and necklines ran g in g from th e very high to th e very low. The young, colorful suits prom ise m any happy, sunny days a t th e beach. O. L.
