Ukrainian Women's Association Of France This year m arks th e 20 th an n iversary of th e founding of th e U krainian W om en’s A ssociation of F rance. F rance is th e adopted hom eland of a large U krainian group, com prised of im m igrants of th e post W W I years, im m i g ra n ts from W estern U kraine who came for economic reasons, and th e political refugees of WW II. These U krainians who live scattered th ro u g h o u t F rance quickly saw th e need fo r a U k rain ian cultural center in P aris, w hich would unite th em in th e ir common goals. The women had a sim ilar con cern. A lthough th e ir group in F rance was sm all, in October of 1945 th ey form ed th e ir own as sociation, w ith th e rig h t to form affiliated B ranches in th e prov inces. They w ere initially con cerned w ith charitable work. F rom th e ir own lim ited resourc es and w ith th e help of U krain ian women in th e U.S. and Can ada, th e U krainian W om en’s A s sociation of F rance helped new refugees, needy fam ilies, and in valids. in 1347 a new channel of w ork opened up fo r th e A ssociation. On A pril 26—M ay 2 of th a t year a U krainian delegation was in vited to atten d th e Congress of th e Union Fem inine Civique et Sociale w hich was deliberating in P aris. The delegation was headed by M rs. N atalia Guer- quin-Rusova, and M rs. Luba W i- toshynska delivered an address before th e Congress. The W orld F ederation of M others was form ed a t th is Congress, and th e U krainian delegation im m edi ately established contacts w ith th is new ly-form ed organization. F or th e n ext few years, th e w ork of th e A ssociation was som ew hat slowed down by th e im m igration of m any of its m em bers to th e U. S. and Can ada. In 1950, however, th e im m igrations to A m erica tapered off, and th e firs t B ranch of th e U W A F w as form ed in Lyon. In 1952 th e A ssociation un dertook th e operation of a U k rainian booth a t th e Fall B azaar of th e MMM. The booth, w ith its folk crafts and delicious U krain ian foods was an in sta n t suc cess, and th e U W A F w as asked to re p eat th e p ro ject th e follow ing year. The U krainian booth is now a stan d ard fe a tu re a t th e B azaar. F o r tw o consecutive years th e A ssociation took p a rt in a Chil dren’s Show, w hich is sponsored by th e Catholic W om en’s League of F rance. In 1953 a new B ranch w as form ed in Lans. In addition to th ese u n d ertak ings, th e E xecutive B oard dedi cates m uch tim e to cultural and educational w ork, and sponsors A kadem ias and m eetings. Be cause of its central E uropean location, th e A ssociation is often called upon to h o st distinguish ed visitors who come to F rance. On th e occasion of th e 20th A nniversary Jubilee, w hich will be held on July 3-4, rep re sentatives of o th er U krainian w om en’s organizations will have th e opportunity to m eet “th e hostess of E urope,” th e U krain ian W om en’s A ssociation of F rance. OBITUARY On Jan u a ry 16, 1965 U krain ian women lost an outstanding fig u re in M arie Tom ashivska, who died in M unich, G erm any. Born in W est U kraine in 1890, she becam e a teach er of classical philology and ta u g h t in Lviv until th e outbreak of W orld II. D uring th e w ar she em igrated to W est G erm any, w here she joined th e A ssocia tion of U krainian W omen, and served th e organization w ith h er experience and dedication. She represented W FUW O a t th e Congress of Catholic W om en’s O rganizations in Rom e in 1957. In h er la st years she helped in th e publication of a sm all leaflet of th e A ssociation.
