International Cooperation Year 1965 has been designated as In tern atio n al Cooperation Y ear by th e U. N. It was P rim e M inis te r N eh ru ’s suggestion th a t one year should be devoted to em phasizing th e im portance of in tern atio n al cooperation and peaceful relations in th e world. All non-governm ental organiza tions a t th e UN w hich are ac tive in scientific, social, econo mic, and cu ltu ral w ork have been requested to p articip ate active ly in th e observance. In tern atio n al w om en’s organi zations are know n fo r th e ir p ain stak in g w ork on behalf of m ore harm onious cooperation am ong th e nations of th e world. A t a recent session of th e S tatu s of W omen Com mission w hich m et in T eheran various common goals in in ternational coopera tion w ere presented before th e Commission. These included th e im provem ent of wom en’s econo mic, political, and social wel fare, and hum an rig h ts. M ajor in ternational wom en’s organizations, p articu larly those enjoying consultative sta tu s w ith th e UN have frequently been able to p resen t resolutions and suggestions directly before th e S ta tu s of W omen Com mis sion. Speaking on behalf of th e ir affiliates, th ey have been suc cessful in prom oting various de cisions w hich g reatly im proved w om en’s lot in various countries. The W FUW O, th ro u g h its m em ber organizations, has been able to b rin g forw ard m any ideas, which, while p articu larly close to our hearts, are not pecu liar to our women alone. These suggestions have been included in th e w orking program fo r th e In tern atio n al Cooperation Y ear by th e N ational Council of W om en of th e USA and th e W orld M ovem ent of M others (MMM) in P aris, France. These include: a) th e unification of fam ilies sepa ra te d by w ar or em igration, b) th e care of single, elderly em igre women, c) effo rts to absolve th e fam ilies of responsibility fo r th e political views of th e ir in dividual m em bers, d) research on th e effects of professional w ork on women w ith children, and e) research on th e w orking conditions of folk c ra ft artisan s in various countries. It is now our duty to become acquainted w ith th e w ork of th e U nited N ations, th e S ta tu s of W omen Commission, and th e N on-G overnm ental O rganiza tions. W e should striv e to en sure th a t th e goal of g re ater in tern atio n al cooperation does not become a vehicle fo r shal low m inds and em pty appeals. Finally, we m u st assum e re sponsibility fo r a b e tte r world by p artic ip a tin g in in ternational affa irs in every possible w ay to m ake certain th a t th e In te rn a tional Cooperation Y ear brings tru e, m utual understanding and a renew ed desire fo r peaceful relations in th e m odern world. H. S. Prociuk 20th A N N IV ER SA R Y Two m em ber organizations of th e W FUW O will celebrate th e ir 20th anniversaries th is year. They are th e U krainian W om en’s A ssociation of F rance and th e U krainian W om en’s A ssocia tion in G erm any, w hich w ere form ed in 1945, in th e firs t d iffi cult year a fte r W W II. A t th e o u tset th e organiza tions had large m em berships (the UW A in G erm any a t one tim e had 10,000 m em b ers), b u t th e firs t wave of im m igrations decim ated th e m em bership ranks. Since th a t tim e m em bership has once again continued to grow w ith th e stabilization of conditions in post-w ar Europe. The tw o or ganizations have since em erged in th e fo refro n t in th e U krain ian wom en’s m ovem ent in E u rope. A n article on th e U W A F can be found in th is edition of our m agazine, while an article on th e UW AG will be p rin ted in a fu tu re edition. To talk goodness — is not good . . . Chinese proverb Prominent Ukrainian singer Ira Malaniuk D ISTIN G U ISH ED SIN G ER Ira M alaniuk, fam ous U k rain ian mezzo soprano has appeared in all th e capitals of Europe, b u t h er closest ties are w ith th e V i enna Opera. It w as w ith g re a t pleasure, th erefo re, th a t U krain ians in th e F ree W orld learned on M ay 10, th a t th e singer had been distinguished w ith th e O pera’s “pro litte ris et a rtib u s” medal. Ira M alaniuk w as born in W estern U kraine. She took h er firs t singing lessons in Lviv, and continued h er train in g in A u stria w ith th e fam ous W ag n erian singer Bar-M ildenburg. H er operatic debut in G ratz launched h er on a b rilliant oper atic career. She appeared on th e stages of th e G rand O pera in P aris, th e L a Scala in Milano, and th e Colon in Buenos Aires, and received special acclaim fo r h er m any appearances a t th e W agnerian F estivals in B ay reu th . The U krainian public has had countless opportunities to h ear Ira M alaniuk a t concerts honor ing T aras Shevchenko, fo r she has an unsurpassed ability to in te rp re t th e g re a t poet’s w ords.
